This is WIP and I don't have time for this currently, but I hope I can pick this up a again soon.

There is a way to use power management in KDE to do this, but I am not sure that GNOME has the same abilities. I would guess that it would, but I have not used it in a while.

For KDE power management it allows you to run a script on ACPI events, and it would be easy to write a script for switching over to a certain profile by running some tailor_cli commands.
