Continue policy-free R53/F136 work in #765 after #953. Replace only the
shared v4 locator parser's temporary split slice with two standard-library
cuts and a remaining-slash check.
All six callers keep one parser. Preserve clean-input/arity/kind/name/
segment/slug/source validation order, blank return fields on errors,
typed diagnostics, source-kind admission, selection semantics, editor
staging, locks, acquisition, publication, and native output.
No new helper, dependency, validation, policy, limit, or behavior.
R53 and #765 remain partial.

How you tested it
Fresh make validate TEST_PACKAGES='./internal/config ./internal/pipeline ./internal/resolver ./internal/resourcediff ./internal/tui' TEST_FLAGS=-count=1 passes after integrating main d5092025, including vet, zero-issue lint, and build. The initial untimed-fixture QF1003 repair and its measured-source snapshot remain documented; CI owns the full root suite.
Final preservation-test form passes against both production variants.
CodeRabbit's directory-unit isolation follow-up uses a quoted test-owned temporary directory; before-overlay tests pass in 0.469 seconds and fresh affected-config validation in 7.846 seconds, plus vet, zero-issue lint, and build. Production/benchmark functions and both datasets stay unchanged.
Fresh make spec-check: 68 items, 1,249 scenarios, 2,053 annotations, two active changes.
Fresh make validate-e2e: 765.839 seconds, 3,501 invocations, all 115 requirements, no gaps, all three required refusal witnesses executed/passed, plus shellcheck. Includes upstream's unloadable-hook-source and update-preview control matrices.
Fresh make tui-qa: all 73 journeys plus four utilities, zero skips, including upstream terminal-mode QA.
Frozen former parser oracle: 35 raw cases across three source values, all six public kinds across three source kinds, exact include/exclusion refusal diagnostics, and editor refusal/no-write plus positive selection.
Five semantic mutations rejected without compilation failures; three now fail public parsing, including both missing-separator include/exclusion assertions. The two remaining direct-only contracts are not observable through admitted consumer inputs; the report explains those boundaries.
Before/after byte fuzzing: 359,959 and 353,370 executions; focused races pass in 1.838 seconds.
Offline root/E2E module tidy, separate allocation profiles, compiled-parser disassembly, and committed specaudit gate pass.
Host adversarial /open-code-review-delegate: 19/19 files, zero skipped, no actionable findings, including all 768 rows, source/binary/trial identities, both measured-source snapshots, the rejected Gemini proposal, and private harnesses.
Measurements
Each stage: 27 cases, six alternating one-second pairs, 324 rows. Keep the
initial 3ad0341d and integrated 0b8284f6 stages separate; never pool or
relabel them. The integrated base already contains #953's independent
runtime-guard saving in both variants. Subsequent integration of main ff2ee37e and d5092025 changes no measured config/dependency source.
Config does not depend on pipeline or resourcediff; updated public-command
gates are rerun without relabeling benchmark provenance.
Final large fixtures contain 1,024 skills, matching exact exclusions, and
one retained command:

Directory, including path metadata
2.066 ms

Marketplace

All have p=0.004, n=6. Eliminate 3,073 allocations, saving about 96 KiB for Git/directory and 144 KiB for Marketplace per call.
Single valid locator parsing drops from one allocation to zero; short
unqualified/qualified times improve 6.12%/7.20%.
Relative-directory parsing includesLstat/EvalSymlinks/working-
directory metadata checks. The initial disk-free comment was incorrect:
its original source and corrected manifest remain archived. Both stages
time the same checks; no case acquires a registry, reads configuration/
resource payload files, or makes network requests.
The separate measured-test snapshot preserves source fingerprints before
the untimed fixture-only lint and directory-isolation repairs. No
production/benchmark functions change in those repairs. Reconstructible
provenance is documented. The later missing-separator public coverage
addition also leaves all measured definitions intact; the probe's Git
base preserves its actual unit-test source.
Retain weaker initial timings and every unfavorable observation.
Non-significant control comparisons do not prove unchanged latency:
hydration is 21.55 -> 22.78 us (p=0.065), directory/1 is
26.58 -> 27.85 us (p=0.394). No universal/geomean/whole-CLI/acquisition/
admission-budget or entirely allocation-free-consumer claim.
Gemini Proposal
Retain a separate 120-row, ten-pair direct-parser probe of Gemini's
proposed qualified && short-circuit against the published Cut parser.
It saves about 1.9 ns for unqualified names (-1.20%, p<0.001), but the
long-name and extra-slash cases are slower (+0.55%, p=0.002; +1.54%,
p<0.001). Bytes/allocations are unchanged. Reject the refinement rather
than imply uniform improvement; production stays unchanged.
All 768 observations remain distinct across three datasets. No public
latency effect or compounded improvement is inferred from that
six-case hypothesis probe.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Performance
Improved the efficiency of configuration locator parsing, reducing memory allocations without changing accepted inputs, validation behavior, or error messages.
Documentation
Added records describing the performance measurements, validation checks, and behavior preserved by the parsing update.
Use two standard-library cuts and an arity check in the shared parser without changing validators, refusal precedence, blank error returns, source binding, editor behavior, or publication boundaries.
On the post-953 base, parsing 1024 skills with matching exact exclusions and a retained command saves 3073 allocations: about 96 KiB for Git/directory and 144 KiB for Marketplace. Large public parsing improves 2.07%, 3.05%, and 3.09% respectively. Keep initial and integrated 324-row datasets separate; explicitly retain directory metadata I/O scope and measured-source snapshots for comment and untimed lint-only fixture corrections.
Preservation, five semantic mutations, both byte-fuzz variants, races, offline module hygiene, selected consumer tests, zero-issue lint/build, strict specs, 68 terminal journeys plus four utilities, and witnessed E2E pass. Host adversarial delegate review covers all 15 files and 648 samples with zero skipped and no actionable findings. R53 remains partial.
Spec-Impact: none - Preserve shared locator acceptance, source-kind admission, diagnostics, error outputs, editor behavior, and publication boundaries while removing temporary split allocations.

Code Review
This pull request optimizes the V4 locator parsing logic in internal/config/v4.go by replacing the temporary slice-based splitting with more efficient string operations using strings.Cut. The change preserves existing parsing contracts, error handling, and validation order. Extensive benchmarking and regression testing have been added to verify performance improvements and ensure correctness across various locator shapes and source kinds. No review comments were provided for this pull request.
Address CodeRabbit by using a quoted, test-owned temporary directory in the public kind matrix instead of inspecting a checkout-relative fixture path. Preserve the frozen measured-source snapshot and document both untimed fixture corrections without changing production, benchmark definitions, samples, or their provenance.
The final fixture passes against the before production overlay; fresh affected-config tests, vet, zero-issue lint, and build pass. Host adversarial delegate review covers both fixes and all 15 files with zero skipped; all 648 samples and source/binary/trial fingerprints still verify.
Spec-Impact: none - Isolate untimed unit-test fixture setup; production parsing, diagnostics, source admission, and benchmark definitions remain unchanged.

Code Review
This pull request optimizes the shared V4 locator parser in internal/config/v4.go by replacing strings.Split with strings.Cut, which eliminates temporary slice allocations and improves performance. The changes are accompanied by extensive benchmarks, design plans, and compatibility tests. The reviewer suggested a valuable optimization to short-circuit the remaining-slash check for unqualified locators, avoiding unnecessary strings.Contains calls on empty strings.
Times are medians. Highlights require ≥10% change and Holm-adjusted p<0.05 across 252 comparisons (time, bytes, allocations). ~ means insufficient evidence of a difference or a change below 0.05%; it does not prove unchanged performance. Small samples can limit detection. Statistical differences do not establish that the PR caused a change.
Workload notes
TUI startup measures 200 selected skills across three harnesses, including disk reads, exact-lock verification, drift checks, and rendering; fixtures begin without materialized output. Toggle transaction measures config/lock publication across four Git registries without sync or reload. Editor-and-reload measures 200 directory resources without dependency reconciliation. Marketplace browse measures 50 fresh disk-cached results, not installed-pin resolution or HTTP latency.
Informational only; benchmark changes do not fail CI. Full benchstat output and profiles are in the tui-performance-evidence artifact.
Measure Gemini requested qualified guard in ten alternating pairs against the published Cut parser. Retain all 120 direct-parser observations separately from the two 324-row Split-versus-Cut matrices. Reject the refinement: a 1.9 ns unqualified gain comes with slower long-name and extra-slash cases and no allocation benefit. Production and benchmark definitions remain unchanged.
Record the normal main integrations and fresh config/pipeline/resolver/resourcediff/TUI validation, zero-issue lint, build, strict specs, all 73 terminal journeys plus four utilities, and witnessed E2E: 3501 invocations, all 115 requirements and three refusal witnesses. Config test dependencies do not include the updated pipeline or resourcediff packages; every historical measurement stays tied to its original base.
Host adversarial delegate review covers all 19 own files and all 768 observations with zero skipped and no actionable findings. All source, binary, trial, and benchstat fingerprints verify.
Spec-Impact: none - Document an unadopted optimization probe and consumer verification; production syntax, validation, diagnostics, source admission, and benchmark definitions remain unchanged.

Code Review
This pull request optimizes the shared V4 locator syntax parser (parseV4Locator in internal/config/v4.go) by replacing the temporary slice allocation from strings.Split with standard library strings.Cut calls, significantly reducing allocations and improving performance. It also includes comprehensive documentation, benchmarks, and unit/fuzz tests to verify correctness and ensure that locator language, refusal precedence, and error outputs remain unchanged. I have no feedback to provide as there are no review comments to assess.
