Goals

Offer a fully-featured and alternative backend for Android's WebView based on WPE.

Subgoals:

  • Increase the availability of WPE.
  • Provide HW integrators with more flexibility to customize their products.
  • Improve the market share of WebKit-based applications.

Timeline

Long-term objectives

  • Fully featured drop-in replacement for Android Webview's backend based on WPE.

Medium-term objectives

  • Implement most of Android WebView's APIs.
  • Support for most use cases on Android devices.
  • Hardware-accelerated video and audio encoding.
  • Periodical releases delivered via Google Play Store.

Short-term objectives

  • Support both for ARM and Intel devices.
  • Support for Android Emulator.
  • Support for full-screen mode.
  • Support for kiosk mode.
  • Hardware-accelerated video and audio decoding.
  • Improve the general architecture and integration between Android and WPE.
  • Implement a good enough subset of Android Webview's APIs to make it usable.
  • Produce demos to showcase WPE Android on actual devices.
  • Update it to the latest version of WPE.
