IMPORTANT: note that you have to set both branch and home in your version.xml with the expected form:

`<package name="evio" branch="evio-5.3" home="[gluex-top]/evio/evio-5.3/Linux-x86_64"/>`

For other packagees, build_scripts has the functionality to clone the git repository and check out a branch. The syntax in the xml file would be:
<package name="evio" branch="evio-5.3" dirtag="evio-5.3">
It would be great if you could keep this convention. You may look at the halld_recon makefile for reference
