PR Summary

Sci/Tech Reviewer: Thomas Bendall (@tommbendall)
Code Reviewer: allynt

This is a linked PR, it's primarily to maintain a working test suite after updates to LFRic Core API changes from MetOffice/lfric_core#465. Main aspects of this PR are:

  • Plumbing to get the application configuration object config to the correct locations before configuration variables are required, generally before invokes.
  • Where APIS use mesh_id, they have been migrated to using the mesh_object_type, in the order (config, mesh, ...) at the beginning of the argument list.
  • geometry/topology enumerations are more appropriately accessed from the mesh object in low-level code and not via config%base_mesh. The enumerations are the same for now, and access has been updated when in the vicinity of code being updated in this PR.

As the changes here are to maintain a working test-suite, the LFRic apps repository still contains many routines accessing configuration from module scope and using feigners in the corresponding unit tests. Those remaining instances are out of scope on this PR.

Code Quality Checklist

  • I have performed a self-review of my own code
  • My code follows the project's style guidelines
  • Comments have been included that aid understanding and enhance the readability of the code
  • My changes generate no new warnings
  • All automated checks in the CI pipeline have completed successfully

Testing

  • I have tested this change locally, using the LFRic Apps rose-stem suite
  • If any tests fail (rose-stem or CI) the reason is understood and acceptable (e.g. kgo changes)
  • I have added tests to cover new functionality as appropriate (e.g. system tests, unit tests, etc.)
  • Any new tests have been assigned an appropriate amount of compute resource and have been allocated to an appropriate testing group (i.e. the developer tests are for jobs which use a small amount of compute resource and complete in a matter of minutes)

I couldn't work out how to make a diff that only included the changes for this PR, so not sure I have checked everything.

I spotted one randomly added comment to remove, but otherwise I'll be happy to approve

Are we able to get a diff between #654 and this please? Or is it not possible with the way the branches are set up?

Ricky Wong (@mo-rickywong) can you confirm if this is the correct diff to look at for this branch?
