Without something like this, it is impossible to control the grippers
from within MoveIt (to plan actions ahead and execute them in a unified fashion).

Mapping the limit states of the gripper to open/close requests
is a common practice to interface with MoveIt.

I also have the corresponding MoveIt configurations around that make use of this module.
