To get your devices recognized by your unix distro you may need to authorize the device. This file and mini-tutorial works for ubuntu, other distros and your mileage may vary ...
- If you already have a /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules BACK IT UP
- As ROOT (sudo) save the contents below to a file at /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules
- Open a terminal
- sudo chmod a+r /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules to allow read permission for all accounts
- reboot
You can also try to restart the udev server, kill and restart the adb server, then unplug and re-plug the usb cable but it's just easier to let the system handle it for you with a reboot
NOTES: Other distro's may require different files and internal commands but this should work on most systems On VirtualBox don't forget to attach the USB device (phone etc) at the menu else linux won't see it
