Overview

Mentors are a core component of student success at Vets Who Code. This document is a work in progress and is a framework to build successful mentor relationships with our students.

Mentor roles

  • Student mentors: These folks advocate for students. They may not technically be able to solve student's challenges directly. But they help keep students on track and accountable. These mentors will best be suited to report student progress and keep the rest of the org up to date.
  • Technical mentors: These mentors are available for code reviews and pairing sessions. They will sign off student qualifications.
  • Industry mentors: Mentors who are industry experts can inspire the organization with vision of what the current industry supports. We've seen PMs, CTOs, VCs, senior and free lance devs successful at this. Their commitment is to keep the organization up to date on industry standards. Different modes of communication we've seen successful is through live/recorded talks, Slack updates, 1:1 sessions with interested students, and blogs.
