๐Ÿ“– About 'Lost in Letters'

"Lost in Letters" is an app that allows users to indirectly experience the visual difficulties that dyslexic patients face when reading text and the phenomena they encounter in real life.

The inspiration behind developing this app is truly special. There was a younger child I met while volunteering at an orphanage. That child would tell me, "iL!, the letters fly around for me! Isn't that cool?" Whenever reading books or studying, they would always ask for my help. Their words remained deeply in my mind, and I suddenly wondered how uncomfortable and frustrating it must be. My desire to experience the visual difficulties and everyday inconveniences faced by people with dyslexia grew, and with the hope that many people could better understand and empathize with the challenges faced by those with dyslexia, I created the app "Lost in Letters." I wanted to show that while reading text is such an obvious thing for us, it comes with great difficulty and pain for others.

Intro

intro When developing the intro view, I wanted to evoke a strong sense of curiosity and confusion in users, making them wonder "What is this?" That's why I designed the intro screen to display some of the world's most famous and widely recognized sentences transformed to reflect the visual symptoms actually experienced by people with dyslexia. This creates a powerful first impression for people when they first encounter the app. Through this approach, I enabled users to immediately sense the reality of dyslexia.

What is Dyslexia?

What is Dyslexia I created an information screen to help users gain a basic understanding of dyslexia. This screen explains the main symptoms and causes of dyslexia, and provides concise additional information to help users develop a deeper understanding of the condition. Through these educational elements, I helped users recognize dyslexia not just as a simple phenomenon but as a real difficulty that many people experience.

Typoglycemia

What is Typoglycemia I implemented a feature that allows users to directly experience the 'typoglycemia', which is one of the most common visual experiences for people with dyslexia. Through a simple toggle button, users can easily switch between and compare the perspective of a person without dyslexia and that of someone with dyslexia. This design enables users to directly experience the stark differences between these two perspectives and gain a more concrete understanding of the difficulties people with dyslexia face when reading text.

Experience Dyslexia

I implemented features that allow users to visually experience the most representative phenomena that people with dyslexia encounter when reading text or books. During the development process, I made efforts to realistically recreate the visual confusion and discomfort they feel, based on actual experiences of people with dyslexia and research data. Through this, users can more vividly experience the difficulties in recognizing and understanding text from the perspective of someone with dyslexia.

Adjust for Better Reading

adjust I was inspired by the fact that people with dyslexia actually utilize various text adjustment methods to improve their reading comfort. Reflecting this, I implemented a range of customization options that allow users to experience the actual coping strategies used by people with dyslexia. Through features such as specialized fonts for dyslexia, letter spacing adjustment, line spacing adjustment, text color changes, and background color changes, users can experience the process of improving readability themselves.

Read Through Their Eyes

Through their eyes To help users gain a deeper understanding of the actual visual experience of people with dyslexia, I implemented a feature that simulates reading with limited vision. I designed two circular viewing areas that allow users to see only the text within those regions. Users can drag these viewing areas across the screen to navigate through the entire text. The text displayed isn't just normal text, but rather text that exhibits visual symptoms actually experienced by people with dyslexia, such as overlapping letters or moving text.
