The primary goal of this work is to assess a physical device that excludes predators from kea burrows; they use camera traps to monitor kea and predator activity around burrows (both in captivity, using the proposed device, and in the wild. They worked with \~1.6M images from NZ DOC and the Kea Conservation Trust, used MDv5 + the NZ DOC classifier to reduce the image load by \~97.8% at a recall of \~96.7%. Primary findings are that (1) burrow protection devices need more work and (2) predation (particularly of eggs) is still a major issue at wild kea burrows, with predation as the primary cause of low fledging rates.
