GSoC 2023
This page describes ideas you can use as a starting point for your project proposal. GSoC offers two project size options: 175 hours and 350 hours. We have designed all our projects to have incremental milestones that can be achieved throughout the programme. Consequently, the projects described below are generally compatible with both project sizes. Of course, the amount of progress you are expected to make will vary depending on whether you are doing a 175 hour project or a 350 hour project.
It's also important to understand that how much progress can be made over the summer is as much a function of the project as it is of the contributor. Contributors who learn to consistently package their work into verifiable pull requests tend to get the most done during GSoC.
For 2023, we are particularly interested in GSoC contributors who have strong skills at full-stack feature development, kotlin and swift iOS, visual design, HTML/CSS, or performance optimization. So if you’re an applicant with those skills and are looking for an organization to join, we’d love to talk to you!
AnitaB.org projects have a huge scope in the domain, so even when we’re focused on something, a large amount of essential work goes into other parts of the project. Every area of AnitaB.org could benefit from the work of a contributor with strong programming skills, so don’t feel discouraged if the areas mentioned above are not your main strength.
Our mission for Google Summer of Code 2023 is to provide an opportunity to gain real-world experience in open source development by contributing to various projects. We aim to empower women and individuals from underrepresented communities to gain valuable technical experience and build a supportive network of peers and mentors Our goal is to create a more equitable and diverse tech ecosystem, where everyone has equal access to opportunities and resources to grow their careers. By encouraging and supporting the participation of underrepresented groups in the program, we hope to break down barriers and help close the gender and diversity gap in the tech industry.
If you want to pursue an idea listed here, please post a "New Topic" in our #gsoc Zulip stream to discuss it! Please make sure to join an open Community Session to learn more about the current status of the various projects.
- If you have not worked in git or GitHub before, please make sure to complete a few tutorials and training since you will be submitting your project's code on GitHub.
At the heart of our mission is a commitment to using technology for social good. We believe that technology can be a powerful tool for addressing some of the world's biggest challenges, and we're dedicated to using our skills and expertise to make a positive impact on society.
We have a community of women technologists, Systers, who have pitched their own original ideas to help empower their fellow women technologist peers. PowerUp targets 12-14 year old girls. Mentorship targets all age groups.

[3] Volunteer Management System (VMS)
[4] STEM diverse TV
This list was born from asking fellow AnitaB.org staff members about needs they see in the women in tech community or needs they have to enhance the programs they have created for women technologists.
-
Integrate meeting scheduling tool for mentorship system.
-
Make a project which is capable to match mentor with mentee (can use machine learning algorithms).
-
Creating open-source website which onboards new contributors.
-
Industry-led Opportunities Pipeline, create a web application where industry partners could input untraditional opportunities to break into the tech field. These opportunities can specify age, educational requirements, location, etc.
-
Open Source Programs, create a application to process smaller 4-week or full day programs to contribute to open source projects. Similar to GSoC, Outreachy, or RGSoC.
-
Project Management Tool, a GitHub extension that organizes the repo's issues into milestones in a user friendly method with a drag-n-drop interface.
-
STEM DIVERSE TV
Android TV, Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV app for promoting diversity in STEM, primary focusing on Women in STEM. See more: doc, presentation, Github - Android TV
Each year, we have students bring their own ideas such as PowerUp, Mentorship System, and Sysbot. We request that your idea has a connection to social impact. It needs to serve a specific community to enhance their lives. The community can be primarily women, open source, or a smaller village with no access to clean water.
