Background

While an MFA student at Brooklyn College's Performance and Interactive Media Art (PIMA) program, I found myself ever more preoccupied with free and open source software. It makes perfect sense.

For one thing, grad students in the fine or performing arts are typically digging themselves in the hole with every purchase; in the tradeoff of time investment versus money investment, well…one's personal economic sense will dictate. In my case, it dictated making do with whatever software was freely available.

But, if were only expediency at stake, there would be no need to go on at such length as to make an enormous document such as this!

Clearly, there is more at stake than a few bucks here or there.
