This is a messy PR because of the fixes to some of the code to make tests pass - it is too much work to break all the fixes down into separate PRs and not much benefit from it I think.
The thing to focus on is the tests rather than the code, to check we're testing for all the right things.
Work-in-progress. The downloader will be broken now because I've changed how some things work, notably there is no
addSourcemethod - sources are automatically added from the input style.
