dataplane, stats: pipeline, worker and flow table telemetry - #1951
Pipeline, worker and flow table telemetry, published through the existing Prometheus exporter. Names follow the existing series: no new prefix, and ports are labelled by their configured interface name, so a worker's series join its port's port_* series.
Commits
feat(stats, net): the pipeline_packets{reason}, worker_<counter>{worker,port,queue} and flow_table_entries families. Values are absolute, read from what the pipeline and the workers already count, so the hot path is unchanged.
A worker's counters count against the port the packet arrived on, whichever port it left by: worker_forwarded_packets{port="eth0"} is what arrived on eth0 and was sent. What leaves a port is the NIC's to count, as port_tx_packets.
Frames the kernel sends out of a port (BGP, BFD, ARP, LLDP) are worker_injected_packets / worker_inject_drops on that port.
queue is data or control, so the DPDK control worker's traffic is told apart without leaving its port.
A reason label is the DoneReason variant's name, which DoneReason now gives as a &'static str.
fix(dataplane): a worker's counters are running totals rather than read-and-clear. The driver's status carries a reader of them, so the CLI and telemetry see them as they stand, whenever they look, and nothing is lost when the supervisor stops. Before this, whatever the workers counted after the supervisor's last poll was lost, and a run shorter than a second reported no work at all. The supervisor keeps what it last saw to tell activity and work out rates, which are now over the time actually elapsed, the first over the first poll period alone.
refactor(dataplane): an rx task carries its port and its queue apart, instead of the control worker's "<port> (control)" name. The CLI shows the same thing as before.
fix(dataplane): the DPDK driver counted the kernel's injected frames as the port's tx and tx_drops; they are now injected and inject_drops, and the CLI shows them. The control worker counted a frame it could not hand to the kernel as a transmit drop; it is a punt drop.
feat(dataplane): the statistics::telemetry publisher. The /metrics handler publishes before it renders, so a scrape sees every count as it stands when the scrape comes, and nothing polls between scrapes. The flow table's size is FlowTable::live_len, an atomic load.
Tests
Every commit passes cargo check --all-targets without warnings, clippy, and the stats and dataplane unit tests. The tip passes rustfmt, rustdoc, opengrep and commitlint. New tests: property tests that republishing carries totals rather than adding them up (pipeline and worker), that the watchdog's totals between two readings are what was recorded between them, and that a rate covers only what was received since the last check over the time elapsed; and a test that renders the exporter's output and finds a port's data and control queues apart.
Not covered by a unit test: the DPDK injector's counting, which needs an EAL. The kernel driver's injection path counts nothing, as before, so worker_injected_packets is 0 under it.

Walkthrough
The change adds persistent, queue-aware receive-task counters and updates supervisor status and rate calculations. It also adds packet, flow-table, and worker metrics, then publishes them from the Prometheus endpoint using shared dataplane sources.
Changes: Dataplane Observability

Summary
Receive-task totals and status dataplane/src/drivers/watchdog.rs, dataplane/src/drivers/supervisor.rs, dataplane/src/drivers/status.rs, dataplane/src/drivers/dpdk/*, dataplane/src/drivers/kernel/worker.rs, dataplane/src/runtime.rs
Watchdog reads now preserve lifetime counter totals, while the supervisor uses counter deltas for activity and rates. Receive tasks carry port and queue identities. Status tables include injection counters, and driver startup passes the configured polling interval.
Packet, flow-table, and worker metric definitions stats/Cargo.toml, stats/src/*, net/src/packet/meta.rs
The stats crate adds metric publishers for packet completion counts, flow-table entries, and worker counters. DoneReason derives static-string conversion for metric labels.
Telemetry source wiring and publication dataplane/src/packet_processor/mod.rs, dataplane/src/runtime.rs, dataplane/src/statistics/*
The runtime supplies shared packet, flow-table, and driver-status sources to telemetry. Metrics requests publish the current values before rendering the response.

Stop the supervisor sleep early when shutdown is cancelled.
The supervisor sleeps for the full poll_period before it checks cancellation again. A large poll period can therefore delay driver shutdown by up to that period. Shutdown must finish within the 15 s default_deadlines::TOTAL ceiling, so a long poll period uses part of that margin.

Three metric families, following `PortMetrics`: registered once, published
by polling with absolute values, so exporting them costs the packet path
nothing.
- `pipeline_packets{reason}`: `PacketStats`, one series per `DoneReason`,
labelled with the variant's name, which `DoneReason` now gives as a
`&'static str` rather than through however `Debug` prints it.
- `worker_<counter>{worker,port,queue}`: a worker's totals on one of a
port's receive queues, from a driver-independent `WorkerCounters`:
what it received, forwarded, and dropped in the pipeline, on transmit
and on the way to the kernel; frames that did not parse, were
truncated, or were empty reads; frames the kernel dropped; and frames
the kernel sent out of the port through it. All but those last count
against the port the packet arrived on, whichever port it left by:
what leaves a port is the NIC's to count, as `port_tx_packets`.
- `flow_table_entries`: the flow table's size, a gauge.
Names follow the existing `port_*` and `vpc_*` families: no prefix, ports
labelled by their configured interface name.

The supervisor read each rx task's counters once a second, zeroing them
as it did, and added them to the totals in the driver's status. It was
their only possible reader, so the totals were only as fresh as its last
poll, and it stopped without a last one: whatever the workers counted
after the last poll, their final report on the way out included, was
lost. A run shorter than a second reported no work at all.
The watchdog's counters are now totals since the task started, which
only the task changes. The driver's status carries a reader of them, so
whoever reads it -- the CLI, say -- sees them as they stand, whenever it
looks, and nothing is lost when the supervisor stops. The supervisor
keeps what it last saw, to tell activity and work out rates.
A rate is now over the time that actually passed since the last poll
rather than a nominal second, and the first is over the first period
alone: the supervisor takes the totals at the start as its baseline,
publishes the status, and polls a period later.

The DPDK control worker's rx tasks were named "<port> (control)", one
string for the CLI to show. Anything that wants the port -- telemetry,
to label a worker's counters with the interface the `port_*` series
carry -- would have had to take that apart again. An rx task now has
its port, by its configured interface name, and which of the port's
queues it serves, data or control. The CLI shows them as it did.

A worker's counters are per port it receives on, and count what became
of the packets that arrived there: `tx` is how many it forwarded, on
whichever port they left by. The DPDK driver also added the frames the
kernel sends out of a port -- BGP, BFD, ARP, LLDP -- to that port's
`tx`, and those it could not send to its `tx_drops`, so neither counted
one thing. They are now `injected` and `inject_drops`, which the CLI
shows beside them.
The control worker counted a control frame it could not hand to the
kernel as a transmit drop. It is a punt drop.

Until now why packets were dropped, what each worker did and how many
flows the gateway held were visible only through the CLI. The `/metrics`
handler now publishes them to the Prometheus exporter before it renders,
beside the port, VPC and rate-limit families: `PacketStats`, each
worker's totals on each port queue, read through the driver's status,
and the flow table's live count, which costs an atomic load. A scrape
sees them as they stand when it comes, and nothing polls them between
scrapes.
A test renders the exporter's output and finds the counts there, a
control queue's apart from its port's data queue's, and finds that
publishing again carries counts forward rather than adding them up.

LGTM.
The packet path is unchanged: same local counting and atomic flushes, and reads are now loads of running totals instead of clearing swaps.
Stuck detection is preserved, and rates are now over the real elapsed time.
A scrape costs a few atomic loads behind the handler's mutex, and the names follow the existing port_* series.
Splitting kernel-injected frames out of tx/tx_drops is a good fix.
@Frostman, will this many new series be a problem on the Prometheus side? Per gateway, this adds:
pipeline_packets{reason}: 36 series, one per DoneReason, all registered up front;
flow_table_entries: 1 series;
11 worker_* counters per worker × port × queue (data/control). For example, 8 data workers on 2 ports plus the control worker's 2 control queues is (16 + 2) × 11 = 198 series.
So roughly 235 series per gateway with that layout, growing with worker and port count, on top of the existing port_*, PHY and rate-limit series.
@daniel-noland, is there a way to see how many packets each worker reads per loop iteration? We need to tell an overloaded worker (full bursts every poll) from a lightly loaded one, in poll mode and in the new monitor/interrupt modes, where low CPU use no longer means low load. Something like a per-worker count of polls and of full bursts (MBUF_BURST), or a small histogram of burst sizes, would do. Exporting the idle modes' sleep and interrupt-sleep counts, which today are only logged at shutdown, would complete the picture. If it doesn't fit here, please file an issue.
Notes, file issues as you see fit:
Under the kernel driver worker_injected_packets is always 0, since its inject path counts nothing. Please count it there, or say so in the metric's help text, so dashboards don't mislead on kernel-driver gateways.
Repo-wide, counter naming is mixed (port_*/worker_* without _total, rate_limit_*_total with it). Following port_* here is right; settling one convention is a separate cleanup.
