I know you’re here because you want to know me, or at least get an idea of the person at this corner of the internet. So, sit tight.
My name is James Muriuki, but you can call me gme (Jimmie). I’m from Kenya, East Africa. I’m an open-source Rust developer hacking on Symposium, where I’m one of the maintainers.
I realized I loved Rust before I even knew what its syntax looked like. So I decided to learn it, partly to have something to bring to the friendly debates with talkative JavaScript and Python enthusiasts at university (then).
After a few months of learning and watching RustConf talks going back to Rust pre-1.0, I came across this talk from 2023. That’s when I realized I wanted to be in the room with the awesome people in this community. From there, I started getting involved in all things Rust.
There’s a line I came across that captures this beautifully: “Most people come to Rust for the promise of good technology, but stay for the people.” The more I get involved, the more those words feel like my own story.
- 🔭 Hacking on Symposium, with contributions to A-MIR-Formality, Cargo, and Battery Pack.
- 🌱 Building my understanding of Rust, its compiler, and language design.
- 👯 Learning alongside the community through language design meetings, Cargo meetings, and other Rust discussions.
- ⚡ Founder of Rust For Life, an imaginary working group with very real enthusiasm.
I hope to spend years helping shape Rust’s future. Today, I’m starting with what I can offer: curiosity, a willingness to learn, and contributions I can build on.
I’m happy to be here and super motivated to help shape Rust’s future.
If you’ve made it this far, I want you to know that you, too, can become a great Rustacean.
“Some of the Rust you’re waiting to understand is waiting for you in the work you’re afraid to contribute.”
