iii dunno. mimes originally had a basic french accent, but then we made the basic french accent into full french with lots of word replacements and added a "basicfrench" alternative that was just the phonetic accent. so mimes got changed to the full french. we COULD change it to basicfrench so they say "bitch" instead of "salope" but first i'm curious if anyone's interested in removing it to cover my ass i wanna be clear that mimes talking SUCKS and my character only does it in extreme situations (like rolling antag), but removing it would allow players to select french, or basicfrench, or whatever speech traits they wanted in case their mime has to open their mouth since we're an mrp server i think it's pretty reasonable to have characters have consistent voices, not changed by what job they're playing... like if someone has a russian accent, why would that change? a vow of silence is one thing, but your character talking completely differently seems a little lrp ig plan B, which i like less than this idea, is just reverting forced mime accent to the 'new' (old) basicfrench. but let's see how this is received first and no, selecting the Accentless trait doesn't override mime speech so there's no way to undo it without this pr. at least, then, actually french mimes can re-select it in traits
i have no real opinion on this pr i just want to say that i think its really funny if god's punishment for a mime who talks is to make them french |
forcing mimes who break vow to be French is really really funny imo. also core to the identity of mime, a role that comes with unique superpowers in a way no other job does. if you hate the accent then revert it to how upstream works and swap it to basicfrench. but imo this shouldn't change at all. people have done unbelievable rp that was impacted by the forced accent (lillian vix you will always be famous) |
as an aside I will note that the suggestions thread (me, Dark, and Bear specifically, I think) loosely agreed that mimes being able to retake their vows might be a little lame. that'd be for a different PR since it'd require C# editing, but I also think a fair punishment is losing your superpower for the rest of the round. it's like you're a silent monk who's lost your focus and you can't regain it until you go to the mime temple and ritually cleanse yourself lmao on the other hand, that slightly nerfs mime antags, because if for instance they have to vowbreak to instruct a holoparasite, then they'd lose their invisible indestructible wall forever. and you could emote at the holoparasite, but there aren't whisper-range emotes so anybody nearby could see you doing all that stuff... I could go either way, personally. but I do think vowbreaking could be a little more serious than ~5 minutes without your wall, accents aside |
the forced French accent is hilarious. it's also a core part of the role's identity. a talking mime is bad enough, but without the accent?! that's so depressing... i really think it should stay |

a central identity of playing a mime and breaking a vow is also being a little hard to understand even past breaking your vow. also people can and should be allowed to make fun of you in dire moments when you break your vow and call you French. dolls are best imo when you can move past character quirks and still do it effectively (Estellise I see you). at the end of the day, part of the quirk of being a mime is being a lil French at most
ok excellent. as i say everywhere forever, i very rarely get emotionally attached to how particular prs work out, i just want the changes to reflect the community's opinions SO now this pr is set to basicfrench as it used to be, so vowbroken mimes can say "BITCH!" all they want |
