feat(bmcsettings): apply settingsFlow priority groups sequentially
Apply settingsFlow priority groups sequentially
Oct 15, 2026
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
BMCSettings now records reconciliation status for each settings-flow group. The controller applies groups in priority order and updates their state during verification. Settings-flow schemas limit arrays to 64 items and reject duplicate names and priorities.
Changes: BMC settings flow
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Flow status and schema validation api/baseboard/v1alpha1/bmcsettings_types.go, api/baseboard/v1alpha1/zz_generated.deepcopy.go, api/common_types.go, config/crd/bases/*, docs/api-reference/api.md, internal/controller/system/biossettings_controller_test.go
Adds per-priority BMC flow status and deep-copy support. Settings-flow schemas limit arrays to 64 items and reject duplicate names and priorities. The API reference and BIOS admission test reflect these changes.
Flow group ordering internal/utils/helper.go, internal/utils/helper_test.go
Adds stable priority sorting for flow groups. Tests cover ordering, tie preservation, and input preservation.
Group selection and application internal/controller/baseboard/bmcsettings_controller.go, internal/controller/baseboard/bmcsettings_controller_test.go
The controller selects and applies flow groups in priority order, using each group’s settings to calculate its difference. Tests cover sequential application, matching groups, and group-specific differences.
Flow state persistence and lifecycle internal/controller/baseboard/bmcsettings_controller.go, internal/controller/baseboard/bmcsettings_controller_test.go, docs/concepts/bmcsettings.md
The controller records group state during verification, persists flow status with apply-cycle status, and resets flow status on stale generations and retry paths. Tests cover stale and legacy generation markers. The BMCSettings guide describes ordered group application.

Explanation
The title "Apply settingsFlow priority groups sequentially" matches the main change. The PR adds per-priority-group tracking (FlowState) and applies each SettingsFlow group in priority order, one group per maintenance cycle. The title is specific and concise, and it names the key concept, so it is a clear summary of the primary change.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. It has the "Proposed Changes" heading and a bulleted list of concrete changes, and it ends with "Fixes #186". The bullets describe the new FlowState field, the group diff and apply logic, the generation-change reset, the condition persistence change, the new utils, the tests, and the regenerated artifacts. The description is complete for this template. It uses internal function names that a reviewer may not know, but the required information is present.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#186] requires applying BMCSettings SettingsFlow entries by priority instead of merging them into one map. The controller sorts groups, applies one active group at a time, tracks per-group state, handles no-diff groups and drift, and resets state after generation changes. Unit and integration tests cover sequential application and state transitions.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The API types, controller logic, utilities, tests, CRD schemas, documentation, and generated artifacts support the priority-based SettingsFlow behavior for [#186]. The related uniqueness and item-limit validations support deterministic flow processing. No unrelated change is established by the whole-pull-request summary. Excluded dist files provide no scope evidence.

The pre-seeded step1-value makes priority 1 already match before reconciliation, so the integration test can mark step1 as applied without issuing its write. The current assertions do not detect this: ConsistOf ignores order, and the final step2-value assertion does not prove that step1-value was written first.
Remove the pre-seed and record PATCH operations so the test asserts that step1-value is written before step2-value. This is a test-coverage improvement, not a production failure.

Remove the pre-seeded step1-value from the integration test’s SetBMCSettingAttr
setup, then record PATCH operations and assert that step1-value is written
before step2-value; do not rely on unordered ConsistOf assertions or the final
value alone.

attempted full unification via inline embedding (BMCSettingsFlowStatus struct { api.SettingsFlowStatus \json:",inline" }) but the Go 1.26 compiler rejects it:
use of promoted field SettingsFlowStatus.Priority in struct literal of type BMCSettingsFlowStatus requires go1.27 or later (-lang was set to go1.26; check go.mod)
Both concrete structs now have identical fields, field order, and doc comments. We can them to a single embedded type when MMO moves to Go 1.27.

Implements issue ironcore-dev#186. When a BMCSettings object defines a
settingsFlow, the reconciler now applies keys in ascending priority
order rather than flattening all groups at once.
Key changes:
- currentFlowGroupDiff: returns only the active priority group's diff
keys; fast-paths groups with no remaining diff to Applied; resets
Applied groups whose keys have drifted
- markCurrentFlowGroupIfApplied: advances FlowState to Applied for the
current group once its keys are no longer in the remaining diff
- clearFlowStateOnGenerationChange: wipes FlowState when the spec
generation advances, guarded by a Reason check to avoid firing on
first reconcile
- updateFlowStateAndCondition: patches FlowState and a single condition
atomically; requires caller-supplied pre-mutation base for correct
MergeFrom diff
- persistApplyCycleConditions: accepts phase1Base (snapshot taken
before any Phase 1 FlowState mutations) so FlowState changes made
during Phase 1 are captured in the status patch
- New FlowState status field: BMCSettingsFlowStatus with Priority,
Name, State, and Conditions
- New helpers in internal/utils: SortedSettingsFlowGroups,
FilterDiffByFlowItem
- Unit tests for all new helpers; integration test for sequential
priority-group application
