The Versions are out-dated.

These distros change drastically across major versions. To my knowledge, nixos-in-place doesn't necessarily work with the latest Ubuntu. Certainly, though, before actually updating the docs to say it does, we need to be certain it does.

This applies to every distro upgraded in this PR.

I got it working on Debian 10 on Scaleway without any issue. The only thing was that it installed NixOS 16.09 which is pretty old :p

Yeah, the install should certainly still work until NixOS 16.09 is no longer hosted. From there, it's just about upgrading your NixOS to the latest. I have tried using the nixos-in-place approach with newer releases and wasn't able to get it to work.

Realistically, even when installing the latest NixOS release, an admin is going to upgrade the system once the install has finished. The only difference here is how long that initial upgrade takes, I think.

Absolutely. Got it upgrade to 17.09, then 18.09, I rebooted to make sure that nix was at 2.0 and then, I upgraded to 20.03.

Why does it fail to install with more recent NixOS?

I don't remember. It has been over a year since I last tried, for sure.
