The pkg-config .pc file is the standard way of locating libraries and headers on many platforms.
I couldn't get the embedded Waf 1.2.0 build system to actually do this, it seemed simplest to update to latest Waf (1.8.15) as 1.2.0 is very old and not documented anywhere now.
