The model of these kinds of radios lend themselves to having to iterate things a lot. This adds a cache of mappings so we can do that less.
This was failing only after a conversation with the radio because we couldn't encode a bytes().
Also another fix on splits.
This is something that never made it from the old UI to the new one, but it's very handy in some situations.
