About the project

Image Processing and Management Service (IPMS) is a web service that offers a multi-faceted solution in computer vision with several features:

  • Image Repository: Our clients can store and retrieve images based on unique image IDs with our service. By that, we will host and maintain persistent data storage in the form of images and their corresponding metadata.

  • Transparency: Our transparency feature allows clients to change the opacity of images from our image database. This is especially useful with our image overlay feature for watermarking while developing free-trial online photo editing apps. By using our service, clients can seamlessly generate watermarked images on-the-fly with specific transparency levels.

  • Cropping: Our clients can use the cropping feature to trim or cut down images to their desired dimensions by specifying desired edge coordinates. This is useful for developers who may want to automatically crop user-uploaded images to fit a specific format or dimension for their app.

  • Change saturation: With the saturation adjustment feature, our clients have the ability to adjust the intensity of colors in an image by specifying a desired value. Developers might use this feature to provide custom filters or effects that users can apply to images within an app or online service.

  • Image overlay: Our clients can use this feature of our service to overlay one image on top of another image from our image database, which can be particularly beneficial for watermarking, branding, or any other use cases where overlaying images are necessary.

Build instructions

Here are the main required dependencies:

  • JDK 17
  • Gradle 8.2.1
  • Spring Boot 3.1.4
  • Spring Cloud GCP 4.8.0

Then, you will need to run the command that can prompt our Gradle to automatically download and install all required dependencies for running our service.

Go to our repository, and run the following command:

For macOS/Linux: ./gradlew bootRun

Windows: .\gradlew.bat bootRun

Client Build Instructions

To create a local browser client for the service, begin by downloading Node.js. Then, navigate to the client directory Image_Client

From here, download the necessary packages with: npm install -g http-server

Then, run the server with: http-server

Using the Client App

This web application is tailored to meet the image editing needs of elderly individuals and first responders, particularly police officers. It provides a straightforward interface to perform various image adjustments like saturation and transparency modification, cropping, and overlaying images.

Functionalities

Saturation Adjustment

Easily modify the intensity and vividness of colors within images. Adjust the saturation level to enhance or tone down colors for clearer visual representation.

Image Cropping

Effortlessly crop images to focus on specific details, eliminating unnecessary portions to achieve better clarity and emphasis.

Image Overlay with Transparency

Combine images by overlaying one atop another, allowing for creative presentations or comparisons while maintaining image clarity.

Image Transparency

Make images transparent, altering their opacity to achieve various visual effects. This feature enhances the visibility of overlapping elements or allows for artistic visual compositions.

Upload In the top-leftmost box, click browse to select a file from your local machine and then Submit to upload
Crop First, select an uploaded image with the Select Image dropdown bar to crop. Then, in the Crop card, enter the desired X and Y coordinates of the the top-left corner of your new image and the desired and width in their respective fields. Then, select Apply to crop the selected image.
Transparency First, select an uploaded image with the Select Image dropdown bar to make transparent. Then, in the Transparency card, enter the desired alpha value (0 - 1, where 0 is entirely transparent and 1 is unchanged). Then, select Apply to make the selected image transparent.
Saturation First, select an uploaded image with the Select Image dropdown bar to saturate. Then, in the Saturation card, enter the desired saturation value (0 - 255, where 0 will convert to grayscale and 255 is the maximum pixel saturation). Then, select Apply.
Overlay In the Overlay card, select the X and Y coordinates for the top left of the foreground image. Then, select both a background image and a foreground image from their respective dropdown bars. For an image to appear in the dropdown bar, it must first be uploaded. Then, select Apply.
Download First, choose the image you would like to download in the Select Image dropdown bar. Then, in the Download card, select the filename of the image (these will be generated as images are uploaded/manipulated)

How it Works

The web app connects seamlessly to the IPMS, offering an array of image editing functions. Users simply upload their images and select the desired modifications. The Image Service processes the edits and allows users to download the modified images to be displayed on the user's interface. The user can also store the images on our servers.

What's New?

The web app offers a user-friendly and efficient solution for image editing tasks specifically tailored for the elderly and first responders. It empowers users to swiftly adjust image attributes, enabling better visual representation and aiding in their respective duties and tasks.

Testing the Client App

The client app is currently tested manually according to these tests:

  • Do not attempt to upload an image, then call each image manipulation function. Nothing should occur.
  • Upload a single image. Do not select it. Call each image manipulation function. Nothing should occur.
  • Upload a single image from the test resources. Select it. Call the Crop, Transparency, and Saturate functions with their respective parameters. Download each output. Compare each one with the manually calculated output. All should be identical with their respective output.
  • Upload two images. Select one for the foreground and leave the background slot empty in the Overlay function. Nothing should occur. Repeat with different combinations of images and empty slots.
  • Upload two images from the test resources. Select the corresponding background and foreground images as labeled, and set the parameters according to API test suite. Download the output. Compare to the manually calculated output in the same directory. The output and the test result should be identical.

Run instructions

  1. Go to IpmService.java
  2. Run IpmService class.

Alternatively, you can also run the ./gradlew bootRun or .\gradlew.bat bootRun command to start the service.

Unit Test instructions

  1. Go to Test directory
  2. Run every test classes under the directory.

API Test instructions

Our API entry points are tested using Postman. Download the app here.

Here is how you set up the Postman API test:

  1. Open the Postman app, go to Settings, and go to Working directory, set the location to our repository. For example: /path/to/our/repository/4156_project
  2. Click Import and select our repository folder. Postman will automatically detect API test files and import them accordingly. You should see an ipms-api-test collection file and an ipms-api-test-environment environment file. Import all of them.
  3. You should see ipms-api-test under Collections. On the top right hand corner of your screen, you should also set up the environment as ipms-api-test-environment.
  4. Start the service by following the Run instructions section above. You should have http://localhost:8080 set up. Go to the index page in your browser and check if Welcome to IPMS! message is displayed.
  5. Now you can run the test by either running them one by one or run the whole collection.
