Overview

Documents the passthrough route allowlist: which provider-native routes Bifrost forwards on passthrough endpoints, and how custom providers are reached through their base provider's endpoint. It also adds the Azure Voice Live pricing fields to the OpenAPI schema.

Before this, the passthrough docs didn't say that requests are filtered by route or how to scope them. They also didn't explain how to use passthrough with a custom provider.

Changes

  • docs/integrations/passthrough.mdx
    • Added a "Route allowlist" section covering the three modes (All routes, Custom, Off). Built-in providers default to all routes, and custom providers default to off.
    • Documented rule syntax: path plus optional methods. * matches within one segment, a trailing /** matches everything below, and the section lists the invalid path characters.
    • Added configuration examples for the Web UI, the API (PUT /api/providers/{provider}, where "passthrough": null restores the default), and config.json, with a field reference table.
    • Added a "Custom providers" subsection showing the x-model-provider: <custom-provider-name> header. It notes that saving routes in the UI also enables the provider's passthrough and passthrough_stream allowed request types.
    • Updated "How It Works" with a new step: the method and path are checked against the allowlist, and disallowed routes get 403 before any key is selected.
    • Noted that custom providers built on openai, anthropic, gemini or bedrock use their base provider's endpoint.
    • Added the screenshot docs/media/ui-provider-passthrough-routes.png.
  • docs/providers/custom-providers.mdx: added a "Passthrough" section explaining that passthrough stays off until routes are allowed, with a link to the route allowlist docs.
  • docs/openapi/openapi.json: added the Azure Voice Live pricing fields, all with minimum: 0. Each _voice_live rate falls back to its normal rate when unset.
    • Text and cache: input_cost_per_token_voice_live, output_cost_per_token_voice_live, cache_read_input_token_cost_voice_live.
    • Audio: input_cost_per_audio_token_voice_live, output_cost_per_audio_token_voice_live.
    • Speech: input_cost_per_standard_speech_audio_token_voice_live, output_cost_per_standard_speech_audio_token_voice_live, input_cost_per_custom_speech_audio_token_voice_live, output_cost_per_custom_speech_audio_token_voice_live.

How to test

Preview the docs site and check the following:

  1. Open the Passthrough integration page and confirm the "Route allowlist" section renders, including the Web UI / API / config.json tabs and the screenshot.
  2. Confirm the #route-allowlist anchor resolves from both the passthrough page and the custom providers page.
  3. Confirm docs/openapi/openapi.json is still valid JSON and the new *_voice_live fields appear in the schema.
# Validate the OpenAPI file parses
python -m json.tool docs/openapi/openapi.json > /dev/null && echo OK

To check the documented behavior against a running gateway:

curl -X PUT http://localhost:8080/api/providers/openai \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "concurrency_and_buffer_size": { "concurrency": 1000, "buffer_size": 5000 },
    "passthrough": { "allowed_routes": [ { "methods": ["POST"], "path": "/v1/chat/completions" } ] }
  }'

A request to a path that no rule matches should return 403.

Screenshots/Recordings

Adds docs/media/ui-provider-passthrough-routes.png, showing the Allowed routes controls in the provider's Passthrough tab.

Security considerations

  • The docs state that disallowed routes are refused with 403 before any provider key is selected.
  • They also restate that client-supplied provider credentials are stripped and never forwarded upstream; Bifrost always injects its own selected key.
  • Custom providers forward no passthrough routes until an operator explicitly allows them.

Checklist

  • I read docs/contributing/README.md and followed the guidelines
  • I added/updated tests where appropriate
  • I updated documentation where needed
  • I verified builds succeed (Go and UI)
  • I verified the CI pipeline passes locally if applicable

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified how custom providers can route passthrough requests through supported base providers, including route allowlists and access rules. Requests that do not match an allowed route receive a 403; invalid rules receive a 400.
    • Documented supported methods and path patterns, validation restrictions, and configuration through the UI, API, or config.json.
    • Added Azure Voice Live cost-rate fields to the API documentation, including notes on how rates apply to speech and audio token types.

The documentation defines passthrough route policies for built-in and custom providers, including matching, configuration, and request behavior. The OpenAPI schema adds Azure Voice Live cost-rate properties and documents their use for text and speech rates.

Speech pricing estimates may be inaccurate if based on the documented fallback. The clarification can be addressed as a bounded follow-up.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "docs: provider level passthrough gating" names the main change: passthrough route allowlist gating at the provider level, which the docs describe. It is concise and follows the docs: prefix convention. It does not mention the custom-provider passthrough docs or the OpenAPI Azure Voice Live pricing fields, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template well. It has a Summary/Overview that states the purpose, a Changes list per file, and the Type of change, Affected areas, How to test, Screenshots, Breaking changes, Related issues (N/A), Security considerations, and Checklist sections. The How to test section gives concrete steps and commands. Minor gaps: the Checklist items are unchecked, and the Go and UI build and test commands from the template are not addressed. Those are not relevant to a docs-only change, so the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. Correct the speech-rate fallback description.

When a standard or custom Voice Live speech rate is unset, audioTokenCost uses the applicable audio rate. That rate is the Voice Live audio rate when configured, or the base audio rate otherwise. If no audio rate exists, the tokens remain priced at the text rate.

The blanket statement that every _voice_live rate falls back to its corresponding normal rate is inaccurate. Update the description in docs/openapi/openapi.json and docs/openapi/schemas/management/governance.yaml to distinguish text-rate, audio-rate, and standard/custom speech-rate fallbacks.
