# Branch Archaeology Project - Completion Summary

**Project:** Systematic audit of 260 repository branches
**Status:** ✅ Complete
**Date:** 2025-12-25
**Branch:** `audit/branch-archaeology-kg`

## Mission Accomplished

This project successfully audited all 260 branches in the repository and constructed a comprehensive semantic knowledge graph documenting development history. The outputs serve as machine-readable institutional memory for agents to query and learn from past work.

## Deliverables

### 1. Machine-Readable Linked Data (Knowledge Core)

All files placed in `knowledge_core/` for agent discovery during L2 Repository Sync:

| File | Format | Size | Lines | Purpose |
|------|--------|------|-------|---------|
| `branch_archaeology.jsonld` | JSON-LD | 155KB | 4,184 | Standard JSON with linked data context |
| `branch_archaeology.yaml` | YAML-LD | 123KB | 3,218 | Human-readable YAML with LD semantics |
| `branch_archaeology.ttl` | Turtle RDF | 122KB | 2,809 | RDF triples for SPARQL queries |
| `branch_archaeology_meta.yaml` | YAML | 6.1KB | 217 | Metadata index linking all outputs |
| `BRANCH_ARCHAEOLOGY_QUICKREF.md` | Markdown | 4.4KB | 230 | Quick reference for agents |

### 2. Human-Readable Documentation

Comprehensive documentation placed in `docs/`:

| File | Size | Purpose |
|------|------|---------|
| `BRANCH_ARCHAEOLOGY.md` | 19KB | Full archaeological analysis with statistics, themes, relationships |
| `BRANCH_ANOMALIES.md` | 5.3KB | Investigation of CoPilot_Experiment_0/CatCleanup convergence |

### 3. Regeneration Tooling

| File | Purpose |
|------|---------|
| `tooling/branch_archaeologist.py` | Standalone tool to regenerate all branch archaeology data |

**Usage:**
```bash
python3 tooling/branch_archaeologist.py [--output-dir PATH] [--repo PATH]
```

## Key Findings

### Statistics

- **Total Branches Audited:** 260
- **Relationships Identified:** 134
- **Convergences Found:** 2
- **Version Series:** 8

### Status Breakdown

| Status | Count | Percentage |
|--------|-------|------------|
| Stalled | 185 | 71.2% |
| Experimental | 70 | 26.9% |
| Archived | 3 | 1.2% |
| Automated | 2 | 0.8% |

### Top Development Themes

| Theme | Branch Count |
|-------|-------------|
| addition | 85 |
| feature | 65 |
| merge | 43 |
| refactor | 37 |
| fix | 34 |
| core | 21 |
| protocol | 21 |

### Notable Patterns

1. **71% of branches are stalled** - Significant institutional memory in dormant work
2. **AORP evolution series** - Clear version progression (v1→v2→v3→v4)
3. **CHC framework series** - Multiple related development attempts
4. **Protocol-centric development** - 21 branches tagged with 'protocol'
5. **High refactoring activity** - 37 branches focused on restructuring

## Anomaly Investigation

### CoPilot_Experiment_0 & CatCleanup Convergence

**Finding:** Both branches point to commit `083394cf` (Delete tests/test_hdl_prover.py)

**Resolution:** ✅ **Not an error** - Deliberate branching strategy

**Explanation:**
- Both branches diverge from a common cleanup commit
- CatCleanup: Systematic removal of obsolete code
- CoPilot_Experiment_0: Experimental work starting from clean state
- Represents "fork-from-cleanup" pattern

**Full Investigation:** See `docs/BRANCH_ANOMALIES.md`

## Integration with Knowledge Core

The branch archaeology integrates seamlessly with existing knowledge structures:

```
knowledge_core/
├── branch_archaeology.jsonld ← NEW: Development history
├── branch_archaeology.yaml ← NEW: YAML linked data
├── branch_archaeology.ttl ← NEW: RDF triples
├── branch_archaeology_meta.yaml ← NEW: Metadata index
├── BRANCH_ARCHAEOLOGY_QUICKREF.md ← NEW: Quick reference
├── integrated_knowledge.json → Can cross-reference branches
├── symbols.json → Can link code entities to branches
├── dependency_graph.json → Can correlate architecture changes
├── lessons.jsonl → Can link lessons to branch attempts
└── plan_registry.json → Can reference historical plans
```

## Agent Use Cases

### 1. Historical Context Queries

**Query:** "What work has been attempted on the protocol system?"

```python
protocol_branches = [b for b in kg['branches'] if 'protocol' in b['tags']]
# Returns 21 branches related to protocols
```

### 2. Prerequisite Discovery

**Query:** "What branches are related to CHC framework?"

```python
chc_branches = [b for b in kg['branches'] if 'chc' in b['name'].lower()]
relationships = [r for r in kg['relationships']
if any(chc in [r['source'], r.get('target', '')]
for chc in chc_branches)]
```

### 3. Learning from Stratigraphy

**Query:** "What lessons exist in failed attempts?"

```python
stalled = [b for b in kg['branches'] if b['status'] == 'stalled']
# Analyze patterns: Why did these 185 branches stall?
# Common themes? Time periods? Feature areas?
```

### 4. Version Evolution Analysis

**Query:** "How did AORP evolve through versions?"

```python
aorp_series = [r for r in kg['relationships']
if r['type'] == 'supersedes'
and 'aorp' in r['explanation'].lower()]
# Traces: v1 → v2 → v3 → v4
```
