Research Engineer & Machine Learning Scientist
Stockholm, Sweden | he/him
GitHub: @olaflaitinen
I am a research engineer, machine learning scientist, and applied econometrician with deep expertise spanning quantitative public finance, biomedical informatics, distributed AI systems, and evidence-based policy analysis. My research program bridges theoretical rigor with production-grade software engineering, translating complex economic and biomedical research questions into reproducible, scalable computational pipelines designed for both scholarly publication and real-world policy implementation.
My research encompasses three complementary domains:
1. Public Finance & Policy Evaluation. Developing computational frameworks for estimating intergenerational wealth and income mobility in Sweden, quantifying tax avoidance patterns through graph neural networks, modeling the distributional impacts of fiscal reforms, and evaluating welfare programme incidence and behavioural responses. This work combines econometric causal inference with sophisticated microsimulation systems.
2. Machine Learning for Healthcare & Biology. Designing federated learning systems for privacy-preserving clinical data analysis, developing graph-based models for multi-omics data integration, constructing deep learning architectures for medical image interpretation and genomic variant classification, and building explainable AI systems meeting strict clinical validation standards.
3. Computational Systems & Infrastructure. Engineering high-performance microsimulation engines in Rust, designing distributed machine learning pipelines operating under strict security and privacy constraints, developing production ML systems with comprehensive uncertainty quantification, and implementing robust MLOps frameworks for offline and air-gapped environments.
My technical practice emphasizes:
- Reproducibility & Computational Transparency. Every analysis includes versioned code, seeded random number generation, content-addressed data pipelines, and comprehensive documentation enabling complete replication of results.
- Methodological Rigor. Causal inference frameworks meet pre-registration standards, sensitivity analyses address unobserved confounding, and all estimates include formal uncertainty quantification.
- Open Science. All code is publicly archived on GitHub with MIT or GPL licensing, research materials are shared openly, and methodological innovations are documented for community reuse.
- Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration. I work effectively across economics, computer science, statistics, biology, public health, and policy communities, translating between technical and stakeholder vocabularies.
- Real-World Impact. Research outputs inform Nordic policy discussions, clinical decision-making, and international governance mechanisms.
I contribute to high-impact research initiatives including a 20-project analytical framework portfolio at Stockholm University covering Swedish wealth inequality, intergenerational mobility, and tax policy; advisory roles in Nordic multilateral governance; teaching responsibilities in machine learning and statistics at Linköping University; and active peer review and technical evaluation roles in computational science.
This portfolio documents my research projects, published work (currently under peer review), technical infrastructure contributions, and core competencies across machine learning, econometrics, causal inference, distributed systems, and applied statistics.
My research practice is grounded in core principles emphasizing scientific integrity, methodological transparency, reproducibility, and real-world impact. These principles shape all research activities from question formulation through dissemination.
Scientific Rigor & Methodological Soundness
Research questions are approached with appropriate methodological rigor matched to available data and identifying assumptions. Econometric work employs modern causal inference frameworks (difference-in-differences with heterogeneous treatment effects, machine learning causal inference, sensitivity analysis) rather than relying on classical methods with restrictive assumptions. Machine learning applications incorporate uncertainty quantification, calibration analysis, and evaluation protocols preventing overfitting. Bayesian approaches are employed when prior information is available and appropriate. Sensitivity analyses systematically examine robustness to alternative assumptions.
Computational Transparency & Reproducibility
Every analysis is implemented with complete transparency enabling independent replication. Research code is written to professional software engineering standards (version control, testing, documentation) and released publicly under open licenses (MIT, GPL). Seeded random number generation ensures deterministic results. All dependencies are version-pinned. Intermediate computational artefacts are content-addressed enabling fault diagnosis. Results are produced through automated pipelines preventing manual transcription errors.
Open Science & Community Engagement
Research findings are disseminated openly and accessibly. Pre-prints are posted on arXiv prior to journal submission enabling rapid scientific feedback. Code repositories are published on GitHub with comprehensive documentation. Replication materials (data, code, documentation) are shared openly. Research is registered prospectively (pre-analysis plans on OSF) separating confirmatory from exploratory analyses. Negative results and failures are documented transparently. The research community is engaged throughout the research process through seminars, workshops, and collaborative feedback.
Ethical Responsibility & Real-World Impact
Research addresses substantive policy questions with real-world consequences. Methodological innovations are motivated by practical research needs rather than pursued for their own sake. Work with sensitive data (administrative records, health information, security intelligence) proceeds under strict ethical oversight and privacy protection. Research outputs are designed to be useful for policy-makers and practitioners. Limitations and caveats are clearly communicated to prevent misuse.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Communication
Research succeeds through collaboration across disciplines. Econometricians, computer scientists, biologists, clinicians, and policy experts bring complementary expertise. Clear communication across disciplinary boundaries is essential. Technical depth is maintained while ensuring findings are accessible to non-specialist audiences. Policy briefs translate complex analyses into decision-maker vocabularies.
