# Non-Record: No-FA3 Stack Combination — val_bpb 1.1854 (1-seed)

**val_bpb: 1.1854** | **artifact 13,515,044 bytes (12.89 MB)** | 8×H100 SXM | 540s training + 322s eval

This is a non-record submission documenting a stack combination that runs **without Flash Attention 3** (the runpod default `pytorch:2.4.0-py3.11-cuda12.4.1` image lacks `flash_attn_3`). All current top-of-leaderboard records require FA3; this submission shows how close one can get on stock PyTorch SDPA, sacrificing the FA3 throughput uplift but keeping the rest of the stack legal and compliant.

The score (**1.1854 BPB**) does not beat the current SOTA (**[PR #1019](https://github.com/openai/parameter-golf/pull/1019), 1.11474 BPB**), but it sits cleanly in the legal merged leaderboard at roughly rank #16 of 23, ahead of the OpenAI baseline (1.2244) by **−0.039 BPB**, with **no SLOT, no TTT, no use of validation data during eval**.

---

## Why a Non-Record Submission

1. **Single-seed only** (record-track requires 3-seed mean for p<0.01).
2. **Trades throughput for accessibility**: no FA3 dependency. Anyone with a stock RunPod PyTorch container can reproduce this in one shot.
3. **Trades quantization quality for simplicity**: uses mixed Q4/Q5/Q6 (Gemma-4 inspired per-layer bit allocation) instead of Full Hessian GPTQ with self-generated calibration. Simpler to implement, less code.
4. **Documents the warmdown-trigger bug** found in our earlier attempt (see "Notes" below). Useful for anyone who hits the same issue.

---

## Results

| Run | Steps | Tokens | Pre-eval BPB | **Post-eval BPB** | Wall (train + eval) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| seed=42 | 3,500 | 1.835 B | 1.2146 (EMA) | **1.1854** | 437s + 322s |

Eval optimization (`stride=32`, `temperature=0.90`) contributes **−0.0292 BPB** vs the raw BF16 base. No SLOT optimization, no test-time training; pure sliding-window inference + temperature scaling on the frozen model.

## Stack

| Compression | LZMA preset=9 | Standard |

### Mixed Q4/Q5/Q6 quantization

Inspired by Gemma 4 GGUF per-layer bit allocation:

| Layer type | Bits | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Q, K projections | Q4 | Attention routing, less sensitive |
| V projection | **Q6** | Determines attention output content (most sensitive) |
| MLP gate / up | Q4 | Intermediate, has redundancy |
| MLP down, attn output | Q5 | Final per-layer projections |
| Token embedding | Q4 | Large lookup, compressed well |

Effective ≈ 3.88 bits/param × 26.9 M params ≈ 13.04 MB raw, 12.89 MB post-LZMA.

This is simpler than Full Hessian GPTQ + self-generated calibration (PR #1019) but loses ≈0.005–0.010 BPB. The trade-off is intentional: the entire quant pipeline is < 100 lines of code.

## Eval Optimization (no SLOT, no TTT)

```python
# Pseudo-code: pure inference + sliding window + temperature scaling
SLOT_STEPS = 0 # ← skips any per-window optimization
STRIDE = 32 # 3× finer than the default 96
EVAL_TEMPERATURE = 0.90 # logits / 0.90 before cross-entropy
for window in sliding_windows(val_tokens, stride=32):
with torch.no_grad():
logits = softcap(model(window))
nll = cross_entropy(logits / 0.90, targets)
bpb_total += nll
```

The model is frozen. No gradients are computed during eval. Each token is scored once. This is identical in spirit to the standard sliding-window eval used by every legal record on the leaderboard, with two parameter tweaks (stride and temperature). Eval time on 8×H100: **322 s** (well under 600 s budget).

Improvement breakdown (rank-0 measurement, validation set):
- Default `stride=96, T=1.0` (Attempt 4 base estimate): ≈ 1.215
- + `stride=32`: ≈ 1.198 (−0.017)
- + `T=0.90`: **1.1854** (−0.0126)

## Notes

### Warmdown trigger bug

In our earlier in-house attempt (single-seed, identical model), we set `--warmdown=150` while passing `--steps=99999`. The step-based warmdown formula
```
warmdown_start = max(total_steps - warmdown_iters, 0)
```
never triggered because `99999 - 150 = 99849`, which the budget-capped run never reaches. Only the time-based 80 s tail-decay kicked in (≈ 14% intensity). Fix: pass a finite `--steps` value (we use `--steps=3500` to comfortably cover the 540 s budget) so the step-based decay activates from `warmdown_start = 1500`. This brought the effective warmdown intensity to ≈ 57 %, which is in the same range as PR #1019 (warmdown=4000, ≈ 58 %).

This fix alone moves our base BPB from 1.2335 → 1.2146 (−0.019 BPB).

### What we DROPPED vs the top stack

| Dropped | Why |
|---|---|
| Flash Attention 3 | Not in the runpod pytorch:2.4.0 base image. Worth ≈ +1.9 % throughput on 1×H100 (Session 2 ablation). |
| Full Hessian GPTQ + AR self-gen calibration | Requires ~500 LOC + a self-generation pass post-training. Mixed Q4/Q5/Q6 is the simpler trade-off. |
| Partial RoPE 16/64 | Untested in our setup. PR #287 reports −0.0023 BPB. |
| LN scale 1/√(L+1) | Untested. |
| Tight SWA every 50 | Untested. |
| Late QAT (LR < 0.15) | PR #1248 found this dead-code-eliminated under torch.compile, kept off. |
| `seq_len=2048` | We kept seq=1024 to maximize step count without FA3. With seq=2048 + no FA3, throughput drops too much. |

These omissions are the reason we sit at rank #16, not the top-five. They are NOT bugs.

This submission stacks publicly documented techniques on top of the OpenAI baseline, dropping anything that requires Flash Attention 3 or large quantization-pipeline rewrites. The score is honest, the eval is legal, and the entire run reproduces from a one-shot RunPod template.
