TML-3683: mongo() takes extensions, and refuses a contract whose required extensions it is not given - #30943
import{defineContract}from'@prisma/orm-mongo/contract-builder';importmongofrom'@prisma/orm-mongo/runtime';importshoutfrom'shout-pack/pack';importshoutRuntimefrom'shout-pack/runtime';constcontract=defineContract({extensions: { shout }},({ field, model })=>({models: {Greeting: model('Greeting',{collection: 'greetings',fields: {_id: field.objectId(),text: field.scalar('shout/text@1')},}),},roots: {greetings: 'Greeting'},}));mongo({ contract, url });// RUNTIME.MISSING_EXTENSION_PACKconstdb=mongo({ contract, url,extensions: [shoutRuntime]});awaitdb.orm.greetings.create({text: 'hello'});// stored as the extension's codec writes it
mongo() and mongoStatic() now take extensions, and extensions work on MongoDB the way they work on Postgres: the contract records the packs it needs, the client is given their runtime descriptors, and the client refuses a contract whose packs it was not given. Before this PR, extensions was a type error on mongo(), and nothing checked the packs a MongoDB contract declared.
The decision
Extensions go through the same path as on Postgres
Client options.mongo() and mongoStatic() take extensions?: readonly MongoRuntimeExtensionDescriptor<'mongo'>[] and pass them to createMongoExecutionStack, as postgres() and postgresStatic() pass theirs to createSqlExecutionStack. The MongoDB stack already accepted extensions; only the client options were missing.
Contract authoring. The MongoDB defineContract takes extensions, typed like the Postgres one. A SQL pack is a type error.
The required-packs check. Building the MongoDB execution context now checks the contract against the stack with the framework's checkContractComponentRequirements, as the SQL context does. It fails with the SQL codes and messages: RUNTIME.CONTRACT_FAMILY_MISMATCH, RUNTIME.CONTRACT_TARGET_MISMATCH and RUNTIME.MISSING_EXTENSION_PACK.
MongoDB contracts require target. The SQL contract schema already requires it. Every emitted MongoDB contract and every contract built with defineContract has one, so only a hand-written contract.json without a target is affected; it now fails at contractFromJson with CONTRACT.VALIDATION_FAILED.
Codecs are declared once, and extension codecs encode writes
A MongoDB component declared its codecs twice: as codec descriptors on its pack, and as a registry from a codecs() getter on its runtime descriptor, with nothing checking that the two agreed. Postgres declares them once. MongoDB now does too: assembleMongoCodecRegistry in @internal/mongo-codec builds the registry from each component's types.codecTypes.codecDescriptors, as assemblePostgresCodecRegistry does, and the codecs() getter is gone. The target's built-in codecs come from its descriptors the same way, so mongoStandardCodecs and buildStandardCodecRegistry are gone too. A codec id contributed twice fails with RUNTIME.DUPLICATE_CODEC, naming both components.
The MongoDB adapter encoded writes with the built-in codecs only, while reads used the execution context's codecs, which include extensions. A field using an extension codec was read through the codec but written without it. Both the runtime and the control adapter descriptors now build their codecs from the stack with assembleMongoCodecRegistry, as the Postgres adapters do, so reads, writes and migration writes use the same codecs.
The adapter descriptor is now typed MongoRuntimeAdapterDescriptor, from @internal/mongo-runtime, as the Postgres adapter uses SqlRuntimeAdapterDescriptor. createMongoAdapter takes an optional codec registry, and _unstable_createMongoAdapterWithCodecs, which did the same thing and was not exported from any package, is gone.
Extension authors build codecs with mongoCodec and declare them with mongoCodecDescriptor, both from @prisma/orm-family-mongo/codec. The facade README has a section on writing a MongoDB extension. A codec with parameters is built once, without a field's parameters, as before; building one per field is TML-3793.
Nothing under packages/1-framework changed.
What changes for users
MongoDB applications can pass extensions to mongo() and mongoStatic(), and to defineContract.
A project whose MongoDB contract requires extension packs must pass the packs' runtime descriptors to mongo() and mongoStatic(), or both refuse the contract.
A hand-written MongoDB contract.json without target is refused by contractFromJson.
Extension authors declare each codec once, as a codec descriptor, and drop the codecs() getter. Their codecs now apply to writes and migration writes as well as reads.
Code that imported mongoStandardCodecs or buildStandardCodecRegistry from @prisma/orm-mongo/target/codecs uses the target's codec descriptors instead.
Upgrade instructions: upgrade-instructions/pending/mongo-checks-required-extensions/, with detection tests.
How it was checked
Tests:
Against an in-memory MongoDB replica set: a contract built with an extension pack is refused without it; with it, db.orm writes hello, the database stores shout:HELLO, and db.orm reads hello back.
The adapter encodes a write with an extension codec; the shared registry function keeps the component order and names both components on a duplicate id.
defineContract records the extension, and refuses a SQL pack, in both its forms.
mongo() and mongoStatic() accept MongoDB descriptors and refuse a SQL descriptor that differs only in its family.
contractFromJson refuses a MongoDB contract without a target.
mongoStatic() refuses a contract without its pack and registers the pack's codec with it.
The runtime and control adapters encode an ObjectId with the target's codec and a value with an extension's codec.
An extension's codec types reach db.orm result types, and its generators reach the contract builder.
The MongoDB required-pack messages equal the SQL ones for the same inputs.
Review:/drive-code-review (system design and code), a full review of the whole branch and re-checks of each fix round. Every done condition passes.
Repository checks: typecheck, tests and coverage in every changed package, the MongoDB integration test files, lint:deps, lint:ratchets, fixtures:check and check:upgrade-coverage --mode pr.
Manual check against an in-memory replica set: mongoStatic() without the pack fails with RUNTIME.MISSING_EXTENSION_PACK and works with it; the same pack passed twice fails with RUNTIME.DUPLICATE_CODEC; where({ text: 'hello' }) on an extension-codec field finds the document; the query builder reads decoded values; an update through db.orm stores the encoded value.
Alternatives considered
prepare() on the MongoDB client in this PR. It is a separate change with its own design, tracked in TML-3792.
Leave the adapter encoding with built-in codecs only. That kept reads and writes on different codecs for any field an extension owns.
Write the adapter's stack type out by hand to avoid importing @internal/mongo-runtime. No dependency cycle exists, and Postgres imports its family runtime's types.
Keep the codecs() getter beside the codec descriptors. Two declarations of the same codecs, unchecked against each other.
Share the required-pack check with SQL. The shared home would be packages/1-framework, which this change does not touch, so MongoDB has its own copy and a test keeps its messages equal to SQL's.
Closes TML-3683.

New Features
MongoDB contracts can declare required extension packs, supported by runtime and static APIs.
Extension codecs participate in MongoDB reads and writes alongside target codecs. Duplicate codec IDs identify both contributors.
Bug Fixes
MongoDB validates contract family, target, and required extensions before execution, with clear errors for mismatches or missing requirements.
MongoDB contracts must specify the MongoDB target.
Documentation
Updated MongoDB guidance for extensions, codec descriptors, contract requirements, and migration steps.
…s required extensions, as postgres() does
mongo() and mongoStatic() pass `extensions` to the execution stack. createMongoExecutionContext refuses a contract whose family, target or required extension packs the stack cannot serve, with the codes and messages the SQL runtime uses. The MongoDB adapter runtime descriptor encodes with the codecs of every component in the stack, as the Postgres adapter does, so extension codecs encode writes as well as decode reads.

…s one does
The facade defineContract accepts `extensions` of MongoDB extension pack refs in both forms, and the factory form types its helpers with them. The README and the extension upgrade instructions point extension authors at `@prisma/orm-family-mongo/codec` for `mongoCodec` and `newMongoCodecRegistry`.

…text compose codecs with one function
MongoDB contract validation requires `target`, as SQL contract validation does; the runtime and decode fixtures that lacked it now set it. `composeMongoCodecRegistry` in @internal/mongo-codec builds the registry from target, adapter and extensions, with the duplicate-id error naming both components; the execution context and the adapter runtime descriptor both call it. The adapter descriptor is typed as `MongoRuntimeAdapterDescriptor` from @internal/mongo-runtime, and `createMongoAdapter(codecs)` is the one adapter factory. The SQL-extension type test now differs from a valid descriptor only in its family. The runtime and adapter READMEs and the MongoDB subsystem doc describe the contract check and the encode-side codecs.

MongoDB contracts now require a target and can record extension packs. Runtime construction validates contract requirements and assembles codecs from stack contributors. The MongoDB runtime and static facades accept extension descriptors, and runtime and control adapters use the assembled codecs.
The Mongo contract schema now requires target. Contract fixtures provide target: 'mongo', and a facade test checks that JSON without a target fails validation.
mongoCodecDescriptor creates framework codec descriptors with codec metadata and parameterized factories. assembleMongoCodecRegistry collects contributor descriptors and reports duplicate IDs with contributor details. Standard Mongo codecs now use descriptors, and former standard registry exports were removed.
The runtime checks contract family, target, and required extension packs before composition. It collects codecs from descriptor metadata rather than codecs() callbacks. Tests and documentation cover these changes.
Use stack codecs in runtime and control adapters packages/3-targets/mongo/2-adapter/src/*, packages/3-targets/mongo/2-adapter/package.json, packages/3-targets/mongo/2-adapter/test/*, packages/3-targets/mongo/2-adapter/README.md, test/integration/test/cross-package/cross-family-middleware.test.ts
Runtime and control adapter descriptors assemble codecs from stack contributors and pass the registries to their adapters. createMongoAdapter accepts an optional registry. Adapter tests cover custom codec encoding.
The contract builder carries Mongo extension-pack types, and mongo() and mongoStatic() accept runtime extension descriptors. Tests cover type constraints, missing packs, and codec round trips. Documentation and upgrade instructions describe the requirements.
The MongoDB extension runtime changes look consistent, but the upgrade-detection patterns still miss several legacy descriptor and config shapes. Affected projects may skip the codec-descriptor migration and lose extension codecs, or hit RUNTIME.MISSING_EXTENSION_PACK. Close these detection gaps, or explicitly accept them, before merging.

…scriptor, and migrations encode with extension codecs
A MongoDB target, adapter or extension declares its codecs only in `types.codecTypes.codecDescriptors`, as a Postgres extension does; the `codecs()` slot is gone. `assembleMongoCodecRegistry` takes each codec from its descriptor for the execution context, the runtime adapter and now the control adapter, so migrations write extension values encoded. `mongoCodecDescriptor` moves from the target into @internal/mongo-codec (public as @prisma/orm-family-mongo/codec). Adds tests that mongoStatic() passes its extensions on, that extension codec types reach db.orm rows and extension helpers reach the contract factory, and that the MongoDB requirement messages equal the SQL ones. Docs, the error reference and the upgrade instructions follow, including the new `target` requirement.

…ests check built-in codecs reach the adapter
`mongoStandardCodecs` and `buildStandardCodecRegistry` are gone; `createMongoAdapter` defaults to the target codecs assembled from `mongoCodecDescriptors`. The runtime and control adapter tests encode an ObjectId, so they fail if the target codecs are left out. The facade and mongo-codec READMEs say a codec whose data type has parameters never sees a fields parameters, with TML-3793 as the follow-up.

Check extension requirements against extension IDs only.
Mongo contract authoring accepts an extension ID of mongo, and the generic stack constructor does not reject ID collisions. Since both the target and adapter also use mongo, a contract requiring extensions: { mongo: ... } can pass the current check with no runtime extensions.
This skips RUNTIME.MISSING_EXTENSION_PACK and builds the context without the required extension codecs. Values that reference those codecs can then fall back to raw values.

Include JavaScript files in the execution-context notice.
The current glob skips .js, .mjs, and .cjs files. A JavaScript caller can therefore miss the notice and later receive RUNTIME.MISSING_EXTENSION_PACK from createMongoExecutionContext. The error identifies the missing pack, and the documented recovery adds it to createMongoExecutionStack, so this delays discovery but does not block recovery.

Update the execution-context notice’s glob to include .js, .mjs, and .cjs files
so JavaScript callers also receive the notice; preserve the existing TypeScript
extensions.
The CLI supports prisma.config.js and prisma.config.mjs, but this selector scans only TypeScript files. A JavaScript config with Mongo extension packs can therefore skip this notice, leaving mongo() or mongoStatic() without the required runtime descriptors. Add the supported JavaScript extensions to the glob.

…sions, spread descriptors and nested codec descriptors
The config detection matches `extensions` as a shorthand property. The codecs-slot detection also matches a function-valued codecs slot in a file that uses the MongoDB codec registry, for descriptors that spread their family from another module, and its in-object patterns allow three levels of nested braces, so a types.codecTypes value beside a legacy codecs slot no longer breaks the match.

…h the codecs slot and shorthand extensions only where they are written
Every repeat inside an object is bounded, so each pattern finishes a 1 MB adversarial file in well under a second; a test checks every pattern in both notes. The registry-file pattern now needs the codecs slot in an object with a spread and no other family, and the config pattern needs extensions as an object member, not in a comment.
