This has been unnecessary for some time, now that the ecosystem is up to speed with new-style package building (introduced with PEP 517). The generated setup.py file has also been broken since Python 3.12, because it imports distutils, which was removed from the standard library. This seems like a good sign that no-one is still relying on it.
