Summary

ir run now sets an otherwise-unset RETICULATE_PYTHON to managed when a script has no Python metadata. This lets Python-using R packages declare their requirements with reticulate::py_require() without reticulate selecting an ambient Python environment first.

Explicit RETICULATE_PYTHON values remain unchanged. Scripts with python-packages or python-version continue to use the concrete Python executable resolved by ir.

User-facing changes

  • Metadata-free ir run scripts now default to reticulate's managed Python environment.
  • Users can keep another Python selection by setting RETICULATE_PYTHON explicitly.
  • The run guide and quickstart describe the default and its override. This change does not alter ir render or ir preview.

Internal changes

  • The shared R script launch path supplies the managed default only when ir did not resolve Python and the caller did not set RETICULATE_PYTHON.
  • Public CLI coverage verifies both the managed default and preservation of an explicit caller selection.
