The actual process used here was to shutdown the old instance, create a snapshot of its disk, create an image from that snapshot, then adjust the initialize_params to initialize from that image (the later is not checked in, we need a ignore on the image to avoid every change re-creating the instances). I also had to move from us-central1-a to us-central1-b to actually get the instance to start. Maybe we could have aborted and restarted this process earlier if we had adjusted the AZ, not sure.
This only applies when creating the instance in the first place, and the hard-coded source is constantly changing (it's date based).
