Hypothesis

Two prior nightlies left ruvector-mincut with a named, open bottleneck.
ADR-345 rejected an agent-memory compaction policy (MincutGatedForgetting)
built on RuVectorGraphAnalyzer::partition() partly because that call was
1,800-2,700x slower than its scalar baseline. ADR-346 fixed a separate
determinism bug in the same call and left the latency problem as explicit
future work, naming DynamicMinCut (bypassing RuVectorGraphAnalyzer) as
the next thing to try.

Tracing the call graph found something more specific: ruvector-mincut
already contains a complete, independent, polynomial-time exact global
min-cut solver (algorithm::exact::minimum_cut, sparse Stoer-Wagner),
already used internally by DynamicMinCut::recompute_min_cut() — but never
reachable from RuVectorGraphAnalyzer, which always routes through
MinCutWrapper's BoundedInstance (the crate's subpolynomial dynamic
algorithm, built to amortize many incremental updates on a large graph, not
to answer one-shot queries on a static graph fast).

Given RuVectorGraphAnalyzer wrapping a static graph, when queried
through new additive methods (min_cut_exact, partition_exact) that reuse
the existing exact solver instead of BoundedInstance, then latency on
ADR-345's own unmodified scaling probe and acceptance benchmark should drop
enough to flip at least one of its two previously-failing latency gates,
while the solver remains exact and deterministic, subject to no public
API signature changes and the full existing test suites staying green.

Architecture

  • RuVectorGraphAnalyzer::min_cut_exact() / ::partition_exact() (new,
    additive) clone the analyzer's DynamicGraph, build a DynamicMinCut,
    and delegate to its existing exact solver. min_cut()/partition()
    (BoundedInstance-backed) are unchanged.
  • MincutGatedForgetting gets a MincutBackend enum
    (BoundedInstance default / Exact) and an .exact() builder.

Files changed

  • crates/ruvector-mincut/src/integration/mod.rs — new methods.
  • crates/ruvector-mincut/tests/exact_partition_tests.rs — new: brute-force
    correctness check, determinism, edge cases.
  • crates/ruvector-agent-memory/src/graph_forget.rs — MincutBackend,
    .exact() builder, backend dispatch.
  • crates/ruvector-agent-memory/examples/mincut_scaling_probe_exact.rs,
    mincut_gated_forgetting_bench_exact.rs — new companion probes, re-running
    ADR-345's exact topology/corpus/seed/thresholds unmodified except for the
    backend swap. The original ADR-345 artifacts are untouched.
  • docs/adr/ADR-360-mincut-exact-partition-backend.md,
    docs/research/nightly/2026-10-13-mincut-exact-partition-backend/{README,gist}.md
    — full writeup.

(ADR-353 was already claimed by another in-flight nightly run on a
different branch — confirmed by scanning all 140 claude/focused-darwin-*
remote branches — so this uses ADR-360 instead.)

Benchmark command and real results

cargo run --release -p ruvector-agent-memory --example mincut_scaling_probe_exact --features mincut-forget
cargo run --release -p ruvector-agent-memory --example mincut_gated_forgetting_bench_exact --features mincut-forget
cargo run --release -p ruvector-agent-memory --example mincut_gated_forgetting_bench --features mincut-forget  # re-run, unmodified

Scaling probe (same ring k-NN graphs, k=8, as ADR-345's probe):

n old (partition()/BoundedInstance) new (partition_exact) speedup
19 69,269.9 ms (pathological outlier) 0.472 ms ~146,800x
50 76.8 ms 0.789 ms ~97x
100 481.3 ms 1.846 ms ~261x
200 2,712.9 ms 4.801 ms ~565x
400 11,415.0 ms 16.174 ms ~706x

Acceptance benchmark (ADR-345's unmodified 84-memory corpus, seed=341):

Policy Compaction (µs) Slowdown vs. baseline Gate (≤100x)
Soft (old backend, re-run) 116,147 3,226.3x FAIL
Soft-Exact (new) 1,993 52.4x PASS
Hard (old backend, re-run) 118,103 3,280.6x FAIL
Hard-Exact (new) 5,038 132.6x FAIL (24.7x closer)

Bridge-survival gap (the other ADR-345 gate, ≥15pp required): 0.0pp on
both backends, unchanged
— strong evidence the effectiveness finding is
architectural (a global min cut doesn't track human-labeled bridges on
noisy data), not a latency/exactness artifact.

Darwin / Flywheel

Neither exists in this repository (npx ruvector harness doctor --json
fails, no darwin/flywheel CLI anywhere in the workspace) — confirmed
again this run, consistent with every prior nightly. No automated evolution
loop; this PR's "evolution" is one manually-added backend variant,
directly comparable via the new MincutBackend enum.

Security review

min_cut_exact/partition_exact take &self (stricter than the existing
&mut self cache-mutating methods) — read-only queries over a graph the
caller already owns. No new dependency, no new unsafe code, no new
serialization format, no change to any witness/signing path. Correctness
verified against an independent O(2^n) brute-force enumeration, not just
"it runs."

Main limitations

  • The new backend is polynomial, not subpolynomial: an extended probe
    (n=800..6,400, exact-backend only) shows its own cost climbing to ~3.9s
    by n=6,400. Not claimed to win at every scale, only at the scale ADR-345's
    own corpus and probe tested.
  • MincutGatedForgetting-Hard-Exact still fails its latency gate (132.6x
    vs. 100x), though much closer than before.
  • CommunityDetector/GraphPartitioner (the other two in-tree consumers of
    RuVectorGraphAnalyzer) were not benchmarked or switched to the new
    backend — flagged as next research.

Production recommendation

Promote min_cut_exact/partition_exact as a general-purpose,
additive capability — correct, deterministic, zero migration cost.
Do not promote MincutGatedForgetting for production compaction on
either backend — the mandatory bridge-survival effectiveness gate remains
unmet; this PR changes why it should stay rejected (evaluated properly,
answer is no) rather than reversing the rejection.

Test plan

  • cargo test --release -p ruvector-mincut — 695 passed, 0 failed, 25
    pre-existing ignored (lib + all integration test files + doctests)
  • cargo test --release -p ruvector-agent-memory --features mincut-forget
    — 81 passed, 0 failed (lib + all integration test files)
  • cargo clippy --release -p ruvector-mincut -p ruvector-agent-memory --features mincut-forget --all-targets — clean on touched files
  • cargo fmt --check -p ruvector-mincut -p ruvector-agent-memory — clean
  • Both new example binaries run successfully with raw output captured above
  • Original (unmodified) mincut_gated_forgetting_bench re-run to confirm no behavior change to the existing ADR-345 artifact

…VectorGraphAnalyzer

RuVectorGraphAnalyzer::partition()/min_cut() always route through
MinCutWrapper's BoundedInstance, the crate's subpolynomial *dynamic*
algorithm built to amortize many incremental updates on a large graph.
Used instead for one-shot queries on a static graph (as ADR-345's
MincutGatedForgetting does), it pays that algorithm's per-query overhead
with none of its intended benefit, producing the worse-than-quadratic
latency ADR-345/346 measured (77ms at n=50 up to 11.4s at n=400, with a
69s outlier below the small-graph cutoff).

The crate already has an exact, deterministic, polynomial global min-cut
solver (algorithm::exact::minimum_cut, sparse Stoer-Wagner) used
internally by DynamicMinCut::recompute_min_cut() on every update, but
never reachable from RuVectorGraphAnalyzer. Add min_cut_exact()/
partition_exact() as new, additive methods that build a DynamicMinCut
from the analyzer's current graph and reuse that existing solver.

No existing method's signature or behavior changes. New regression tests
verify the exact path's output against an independent O(2^n) brute-force
enumeration and check determinism across repeated calls.

…tGatedForgetting

Add a MincutBackend enum (BoundedInstance default, Exact) and an
.exact() builder on MincutGatedForgetting, routing boundary-partition
queries through ruvector-mincut's new RuVectorGraphAnalyzer::
partition_exact() instead of partition() when selected. mincut_trials
is ignored under Exact (treated as 1): a deterministic global-optimum
solver gains nothing from repeated calls, unlike BoundedInstance's
heuristic search.

Add two companion examples re-running ADR-345's exact scaling probe and
acceptance benchmark (same topology, corpus, seed, and thresholds,
unmodified) against the new backend for a direct, apples-to-apples
comparison. The original ADR-345 artifacts are left untouched.

Documents the hypothesis, measured evidence (scaling probe and ADR-345's
unmodified acceptance benchmark re-run on both backends), and promotion
decision for RuVectorGraphAnalyzer::{min_cut_exact, partition_exact}:
the new backend is promoted as a general-purpose capability (97x-146,800x
faster, flips the Soft candidate's latency gate to PASS), while
MincutGatedForgetting itself remains not promoted for production use
(the bridge-survival effectiveness gate is unmet on both backends,
reconfirming it is independent of backend latency/exactness).

ADR-353 was already claimed by another in-flight nightly run on a
different branch (confirmed by scanning all remote branches); this uses
ADR-360 to avoid a numbering collision.

CI status: two failing checks, both pre-existing on main, not caused by this PR

This PR's head (21f1a220) shows three failing checks, which reduce to two root causes — neither touched by this diff (this PR only changes Rust source in ruvector-mincut/ruvector-agent-memory plus docs; no Cargo.toml/package.json dependency version was changed):

  1. cargo audit (RustSec advisories) / Security audit (same root cause, two workflows: supply-chain.yml and ci.yml) — fails on quinn-proto 0.11.15 (RUSTSEC-2026-0338/0339/0340/0341) plus unmaintained/unsound warnings on rustls-pemfile, unsafe-libyaml, and lru. None of these crates are referenced anywhere in this PR's diff.
  2. npm audit (npm/ workspace) — fails on axios, compression, fast-copy, ip-address, proxy-addr, qs (→ body-parser/express), 9 advisories total. This PR touches no npm files.

Confirmed pre-existing on main, not something this PR introduced or can fix by itself:

  • The npm audit (npm/ workspace) job already failed with this exact signature on main's own most recent commit (ba5cb62c) before this branch was created, and the supply-chain workflow has failed on every one of the last 5 pushes to main over the past two days (runs 38180748043, 38173815540, 38169271258, 38164443167, 38163488490) — a persistent, pre-existing condition, not a flake tied to any specific commit's content. The push output for this branch also reported "GitHub found 43 vulnerabilities on ruvnet/RuVector's default branch," i.e. this is already tracked separately (Dependabot).

No fix for these advisories exists in-tree that I can port into this PR, and bumping quinn-proto/axios/compression/etc. across this workspace is an unrelated, out-of-scope dependency-upgrade effort — doing it here would widen a mincut-algorithm PR into an unrelated supply-chain fix with its own regression risk. Standing down on these two checks rather than re-running (this isn't a flake) or widening the PR's scope.

All checks relevant to this PR's actual changes (Clippy, Rustfmt, Workspace CI test suites, MinCut regression/real-data workflows, ADR numbering guard, workspace membership guard) are green or in progress.

Follow-up: cargo deny (license + source + ban policy) also fails on this head, but it's the same root cause as the cargo audit/Security audit failures already reported above — its output is advisories FAILED, bans ok, licenses ok, sources ok, flagging the same RustSec advisory database (confirmed RUSTSEC-2024-0449, unsafe-libyaml, among the advisories it lists) against the same unchanged dependency tree. Not a fourth distinct issue, no additional action needed beyond what's already noted.

CI status: Tests (core-and-rest) failure, also pre-existing on main

This job fails during test-binary linking, not in any test this PR added or touches:

error: could not compile `ruvector-typesafe-train` (test "real_data") due to 1 previous error
rust-lld: error: undefined symbol: std::__cxx11::basic_string<wchar_t, ...>::_M_replace_cold(...)
  >>> referenced by logging.cc
  >>>     logging.cc.o:(...) in archive .../libort_sys-....rlib
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

This is a native C++ ABI/linker mismatch inside ort_sys (the ONNX Runtime bindings pulled in by ruvector-typesafe-train's real_data test), unrelated to ruvector-mincut or ruvector-agent-memory.

Confirmed pre-existing on main: the same job (Tests (core-and-rest), same step, same libort_sys undefined-symbol error against ruvector-typesafe-train's real_data test binary) already fails on main's own tip commit (ba5cb62c, run 38180748050) — i.e. before this branch existed and without any of this PR's changes applied.

Same disposition as the audit/deny findings above: not this PR's to fix (no code in this diff touches ONNX/ort_sys/C++ linking), no existing fix identified to port, and fixing a native toolchain/ABI mismatch for a prebuilt ONNX Runtime archive is out of scope for a mincut-algorithm PR. Standing down rather than widening scope.

All of this PR's substantive checks (Clippy, Rustfmt, Cargo check, Tests (vector-index), Tests (core-platform), MinCut regression/real-data, ADR numbering guard, workspace membership guard) are green.

CI status: Tests (core-and-rest-heavy) — one flaky test, unrelated to this PR

3595/3596 tests passed. The one failure is ruvllm-cli::serve_strict::allow_mock_serves_labeled_placeholder_responses:

thread 'allow_mock_serves_labeled_placeholder_responses' panicked at crates/ruvllm-cli/tests/serve_strict.rs:138:62:
called `Result::unwrap()` on an `Err` value: Os { code: 111, kind: ConnectionRefused, message: "Connection refused" }

This is a ruvllm-cli integration test that starts a local server and then connects to it over a real TCP socket — a classic connect-before-bind race, not a correctness issue in anything this PR touches (ruvector-mincut/ruvector-agent-memory). This same job (Tests (core-and-rest-heavy)) passed cleanly on main's own tip commit a couple of days ago, consistent with this being a timing flake rather than a regression.

I attempted one re-run (rerun_failed_jobs on this workflow run) to confirm, but GitHub rejected it with "This workflow is already running" since other jobs in the same run (the long-running ruvector-nervous-system test suites) were still in progress — re-running individual jobs isn't possible until the whole run completes. I'll re-run once it finishes; if it passes on retry that confirms the flake, and if it fails again in the same way I'll treat it as worth a closer look (though still almost certainly unrelated to this diff, given the crate and failure mode).
