Become a sponsor to Orta Therox
Hi folks - I'm a developer & designer, and I care about developer ecosystems. I mix these skills to improve (or create) open source tools people love.
In my spare time, I've helped create and contributed to projects which define how a lot of people do their daily work. Such as CocoaPods, Prettier, React Native, GraphQL, Jest, Svelte and Danger. I want to do more of that.
Things I'm Exploring
Today, I'm exploring bootstrapping my YouTube and Twitch pages. The goal for the pages are to make videos which are developers with a couple of years under their belt, I think it's a space with a lot of open areas to explore on the platforms.
One of my main goals with YouTube is to do deep dives into the cultural context of why complex technologies like git, Signal or Webkit. On twitch, I do pair programming on complex topics with others.
On the code side,
- I have some nontrivial re-designs for the Babel and Docusaurus homepages.
- I want to work on the docs for the JavaScript/TypeScript bindings for GTK be first-class (and not assume deep GTK knowledge)
- I'm interested in some of the problems that the Swift Package Index is addressing.
- The Danger documentation infra was built for 1 implementation, not 5! The docs site is really stretching past it's initial goals and needs some serious re-architecting.
I'd like to use sponsorship to orient my time towards more work like this. My goals with sponsorship aren't tied to one specific project, ecosystem or idea. There's just a lot of low hanging fruit out there for someone with a background in design, development and open source - I want to collaborate with other to help pick it.
To give you a sense of my previous, and on-going work.
In The JavaScript Ecosystem...
I re-designed the homepages for hyper-popular tools:
I've helped design and product manage important tooling movements like a separate GraphiQL working group, a GraphiQL 2.0 re-write and TypeScript Support in Svelte. Importantly, I've helped these projects run without my intervention because others became more invested.
I've built countless npm modules, VS Code extensions and GitHub Actions which are well used, and well received.
For The macOS/iOS Ecosystem...
I helped build and maintain CocoaPods for the last 8 years. I still make sure that ecosystem does not fail. Starting with a re-design, then creating all of the docs from scratch, then co-building the Mac app which I eventually deprecated.
For The Other Ecosystems...
I built Danger in four separate programming languages, and help get a fifth set up. Over the last five years, collectively, they account for tens of millions of downloads. Helping people raise and maintain the bar of culture quality on countless repos.
Things Which This Doesn't Include
I'm lucky enough to get to work on a developer ecosystem full time at Microsoft. Sponsoring my work does not affect anything related to TypeScript, given that I'm actually paid to work on that 🎉.
