Legend of the Ice People Data Repository

This repository contains data associated with the Legend of the Ice People book series by Margit Sandemo, specifically focusing on its Icelandic book releases in written form from the 1980s and the corresponding audiobooks available on Storytel in 2017. The repository also includes code in R and Python for data analysis and manipulation.

Contents

The repository is organized as follows:

  • data/: This directory contains the datasets related to the Legend of the Ice People book series. It includes information about the Icelandic book releases from the 1980s and the corresponding audiobooks available on Storytel in 2017. After the presentation at Reykjavík Databeers, Utopia Artica generously provided the missing census data to complement the data analysis. For more details, visit Utopia Artica's ÍSKISUR page.

  • code/: This directory contains code examples in R and Python for data analysis and manipulation. The code can be used to explore and analyze the provided datasets.

  • LaTeX/: This folder contain the LaTeX files initially prepared for a presentation at the 6th Reykjavík Databeers seminar on June 15, 2023, at Orkuveita Reykjavíkur, where they highlighted data analysis from the Legend of the Ice People dataset. These files were subsequently modified for a presentation at the Advania Haustráðstefna, which took place in Harpa on September 8th, 2023.

Presentation

The slides in the LaTeX directory are from the Haustráðstefna Advania held on September 8th, 2023.

Pushing Boundaries: A Data-Driven Dive into 'Legend of the Ice People'
Discover the unexpected synergy of literature and data science as we explore Margit Sandemo's cherished series. Extract insights from its various formats, from print to audio to podcasts, showcasing the transformative power of data in unanticipated domains.

This presentation is an enhanced version of the one delivered at the 6th installment of the Reykjavík Databeers seminar on June 15, 2023, at Orkuveita Reykjavíkur. If you're interested in the original presentation, it is tagged under Reykjavik-DataBeers-Presentation in the repository. However, we encourage you to focus on the current Advania presentation for a more refined experience.
