Resolves #303

Some plugins produce results that webpack's cache shouldn't keep, for example when the output depends on state webpack doesn't track. A webpack loader handles that with this.cacheable(false), but unplugin's load and transform context had no way to reach it. The only route today is this.getNativeBuildContext?.().loaderContext?.cacheable(false). @antfu suggested on the issue adding cacheable to the transform context, so this does that for load and transform.

  • UnpluginContext gets an optional cacheable?: (flag?: boolean) => void, documented as available only in load/transform on webpack and Rspack. It's optional like getNativeBuildContext, so plugins that run on several bundlers call this.cacheable?.(false).
  • createContext in src/webpack/context.ts and src/rspack/context.ts forwards it to the loader context. Both loaders already use createContext, and Rsbuild goes through the rspack loaders, so all three get it. Other bundlers are unchanged and this.cacheable stays undefined there. resolveId doesn't get it, since it doesn't run in a loader.
  • Docs: a this.cacheable row in the Supported Context table, with a footnote on where it works and the ?. call for cross-bundler plugins.

How I tested it:

  • New test/unit-tests/cacheable/cacheable.test.ts runs a real webpack and a real rspack build twice with the same compiler and the in-memory cache. The plugin calls this.cacheable(false) in load for one module and in transform for another. On the second build those two modules are built again and entry.js comes from the cache. On main both tests fail, because all three modules come from the cache.
  • Added createContext tests in test/unit-tests/webpack/context.test.ts and test/unit-tests/rspack/context.test.ts that check the call reaches the loader's cacheable.
  • pnpm test: 34 files passed, 4 skipped; 298 tests passed, 65 skipped. pnpm lint and pnpm typecheck pass.

createContext is one line in each adapter, so if the webpack/rspack shared-core work in plans/009 lands first, this moves over easily.

Happy to take suggested changes, including on the naming or the docs wording.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Plugin authors can mark results from load and transform hooks as non-cacheable in webpack, Rspack, and Rsbuild.
  • Documentation

    • Clarified where cache control is supported, when it can be used, and how to handle bundlers that do not provide it.

Forward `cacheable` from the loader context so a plugin can call `this.cacheable(false)` in `load` or `transform` when its result must not be restored from the webpack/rspack cache.

Walkthrough

The plugin context now exposes optional cache control in load and transform hooks. Webpack and Rspack contexts forward the setting to their loaders. The guide documents bundler support and usage, and tests cover flag forwarding and caching across repeated builds.

Explanation

Issue #303 asks for a way to disable webpack caching for loader-backed load and transform results. The reviewed head adds optional cacheable?: (flag?: boolean) => void to UnpluginContext (src/types.ts, per the change summary). createContext in src/webpack/context.ts and src/rspack/context.ts forwards the call to loader.cacheable(flag). Rsbuild uses the rspack loaders, so it receives the same method. Other bundlers do not set it, and resolveId does not receive it. The new test/unit-tests/cacheable/cacheable.test.ts runs real webpack and rspack builds. It uses this.cacheable?.(false) in load for loaded.js and in transform for transformed.js. It checks two cases: an in-memory cache with two runs on one compiler, and a persistent filesystem cache with two compilers. In both cases the expected call counts show that the marked modules rebuild and entry.js is served from cache. The createContext unit tests in the webpack and rspack context test files check the forwarding call. The change since the previous review adds the persistent-cache test case. That case covers the same requirement, so the earlier conclusion still holds. The issue's alternative of passing loader options is not required by the issue text.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every changed area supports the optional loader-context cacheable capability requested in #303. The changes are: the optional type property in src/types.ts, the one-line forwarding in the webpack and rspack createContext adapters, the Supported Context documentation for the new method and its optional-call form, and unit and build tests for the new behavior. The change since the previous review adds a persistent-cache test case to the same test file, which is also part of this feature. No unrelated change is shown in the supplied evidence. The type and documentation changes were assessed from the change summary, not from a full diff read.

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 6 files.

Exercise persistent-cache restoration with a fresh compiler.

buildTwice runs both compilations on the same compiler, and webpack uses cache: { type: 'memory' }. The assertions do not detect a regression where a fresh compiler restores loaded.js or transformed.js from persistent disk cache. Add a filesystem-cache case that closes the first compiler and creates a new compiler with the same cache directory before the second build.

Build once, close the compiler, then build again with a new compiler that shares the cache directory, so the second build can only reuse the cache on disk. Uses webpack's filesystem cache and Rspack's persistent cache.

Added the persistent-cache case from the review in 5e78188. Each bundler now also builds once, closes the compiler, and builds again with a new compiler on the same cache directory (webpack cache.type: 'filesystem', Rspack cache.type: 'persistent'). The second compiler can only reuse what's on disk, which is the restart case from #303.

It catches the regression: with cacheable turned into a no-op in both adapters, the new cases fail because the fresh compiler restores loaded.js and transformed.js from disk. entry.js being transformed once confirms the disk cache is really read. The cases take about 250 ms (webpack) and 25 ms (Rspack), and the cache directories sit inside the test's temp root, so the existing afterAll cleanup removes them.
