extract_variables now passes an explicit locals dictionary to exec, to avoid falling foul of unpredictable behaviour when modifying the dictionary returned by locals(). Also add some more TODO comments for further improvements.
This rather important step had been omitted from the GitHub workflow configuration.
parameters.py was using PEP-701-style nested quotation marks in an f-string, making it incompatible with Python versions below 3.12. Now fixed.
