I am looking into doing something similar, but perhaps running a PPP stack on an ESP32 so that you could conceivably use TCP on a 16-bit-class machine.
I stumbled across this while looking into it; I think it might be useful to keep me from having to run a serial line across my workshop for pushing programs to my NEC PC88.
