Steps for Correcting MEI files

0. MEI Check

Make sure that in the MEI file, the SB numbering is in numerical order! In the salzinnes 2013 test, sometimes it jumps from 1, 2, 11, 12 ... 3, 4 .. instead of just in increasing order. Certain features will not work if this is the case.

1. Empty Systems

Often, when an entire system is empty when loading a new file, the issue is that the OMR process did not catch the clef at the beginning of the system. All the neumes/divisions are in the MEI file, but are unable to be rendered without a clef on the system.

The solution is to place a clef at the correct position at the beginning of the empty system. This will automatically refresh the page. You can check the correct positioning by increasing the image opacity. The clef will be saved to the MEI file, and when you reload the page, all the missing objects on the system should appear.

FOR THE SALZINNES 2013 TEST, even if on the image the clef is an f clef, all of the notes could be saved as if the clef was a c clef (or vice versa), meaning putting an f clef will place all the notes 3 pitches off. There is no solution to this, but you can group select and move all the pitches down if this happens.

*Note: If there are systems that are split into two, and neither has notes on it, to put the clef on the system that is higher up vertically. This may be either the left or right system. If it's the right one, you will have to move the clef to the correct position after step 2.

2. Merging Systems

When the original image file has a staff that is not perfectly straight, sometimes the OMR process will detect it as two separate stafflines. In cases where this happens, usually all the note information is stored on the one that is slightly higher up vertically, and the other one contains no information.

Making sure you do this after the first step if neither system has notes that appear, disable the staff lock in edit mode and box the two system you wish to merge by clicking and dragging over them. You can then click the merge systems button on the side bar, or use the hotkey m to merge them. This will automatically refresh the page and the systems will disappear and be replaced by a single system with all the elements on it.

NOTE : Merging systems ungroups all groupings. You must manually regroup them. To do this quickly you can use the quick group "g" hotkey.

3. Correcting the notes

This is the fun part! Now you can go through each line note by note and see if it lines up with the background image. The best configuration I've found for this is to set image opacity to ~50%, glyph opacity to 100%, and using the Hide Glyph Hotkey, "H" in order to quickly compare the glyphs to the underlying image. The most common things to look out for are:

  • Missing notes/divisions: Place the correct note from the insert menu where it should be on the image
  • Incorrect pitches: A lot of times a group of notes are a few pitches off. Just select them and drag them down.
  • Ungrouped neumes/Incorrect groupings: Simply arrange the notes in the correct arrangement, ungrouping if needed, then select the correct grouping from the dropdown.
