LASD Update
There were minor issues with the release dates within the data, some records had no release dates while others had a release date that was set beyond 12/31/2015, those records were logged and their release dates were changed to 12/31/2015. A total of 4,000 records were affected by this change. A total of 469,313 records were geocoded using an address locator provided by Arcgis 10.3, of those home addresses geocoded only 381,041 records, roughly 81 percent, were in Los Angeles. The results were spatially joined to the Los Angeles County neighborhood boundary (V5) shape file and the Los Angeles County Region (V5) shapefile define by Los Angeles Times. With those two boundary shape files, the Million Dollar Hoods project can map out incarceration at the neighborhood and regional level. The LASD data's fields booking number, cost, charge type, charge level, jail days, neighborhood, region, latitude and longitude, and gender were uploaded to mdbla's carto account as tables and shape files.
The Los Angeles 2016 data was processed the same way as the LASD 2010 to 2015 data from the release dates to the geocoding. For the release date issue affected 1,657 records and had their release date adjusted to 12/31/2016. A total of 67,377 home addresses records were geocoded, 55,385 records, roughly 82 percent, were in Los Angeles. The 2016 data was combined with LASD 2010-2015 data making a total of 436,426 geocoded arrests records and 536,690 total arrest records of LASD 2010 to 2016. This update will be uploaded on million dollar hoods by the end of summer 2017.
