Why are there multiple tokens with similar names, e.g. TetherUS?

Omni Layer tokens have multiple properties, such as a numerical identifier and a name.

While the identifier of a token is unique, the name is not, which was an intentional design choice to avoid name squatting of tokens. Therefore it is possible to create as many tokens with already used names as possible.

When receiving payments, always check the token identifier!

Popular tokens and their token identifier are for example:

Token identifier Name
1 Omni
3 MaidSafeCoin
31 TetherUS
