Summary

  • Removes the static eventBasedHardware allowlist (hard break — old ConfigMaps fail strict-YAML validation immediately). Every BMC with a working Redfish EventService is now subscribed by default.
  • New opt-out schema: excludeHardware (suppress specific vendor/model/firmware ranges) and testEventOverrides (per-vendor test event params; testMessageId is now optional — auto-discovered at runtime).
  • ProbeEventService added to the Client interface: checks EventService.ServiceEnabled / SubmitTestEventTarget, then walks EventService.RegistryPrefixes → /redfish/v1/Registries to auto-discover a viable TestMessageId. Result cached in memory and persisted as BMC annotation telemetry.metal.ironcore.dev/discovered-test-message-id.
  • /sd/bmcs SD endpoint now omits BMCs with active push subscriptions so the external redfish-exporter does not double-scrape them. Handler.SubscribedBMCs func wired from subReconciler.ActiveSubscriptions.
  • hack/verify-test-events: --probe flag added for auto-discovery; uses IsExcluded / TestOverrideFor for the new schema.
  • .gitignore: covers servers.yaml and config.yaml in hack/verify-test-events (may contain real BMC credentials).

Breaking change

ConfigMaps using eventBasedHardware must be migrated to the new schema before deploying. The operator will refuse to load the config and log a clear parse error.

New minimal config (subscribes everything, no health check):

apiVersion: telemetry.metal.ironcore.dev/v1alpha1
subscriptionReconcileInterval: 10m

With opt-out and test overrides:

apiVersion: telemetry.metal.ironcore.dev/v1alpha1
subscriptionReconcileInterval: 10m
testEventInterval: 5m
excludeHardware:
  - vendor: "Supermicro"
    models: ["*"]
testEventOverrides:
  - vendor: "Dell Inc."
    models: ["*"]
    testMessageId: "FAN.1.0.FAN0001"
    testSeverity: "Informational"
  - vendor: "HPE"
    models: ["*"]
    testMessageId: "iLOEvents.1.0.TestAlert"
    testSeverity: "OK"
    testOriginOfCondition: "/redfish/v1/Managers/1"

Test plan

  • All unit tests pass (make test): 285 tests across telemetry/discovery packages
  • go build ./... clean
  • Verify old ConfigMap with eventBasedHardware is rejected at parse time
  • Deploy to a test cluster and confirm BMCs without an override row auto-discover their TestMessageId from Redfish registries
  • Confirm /sd/bmcs omits subscribed BMCs; redfish-exporter scrapes only the remainder

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • BMC discovery now indicates subscription status and reasons. Telemetry subscriptions can use configured test-event overrides or discover a suitable event message from the BMC.
    • Test-event verification can optionally probe BMC event registries when no message ID is configured.
  • Changes

    • BMC and BIOS version resources now define their upgrade settings directly, and settings resources require a version.
    • Duplicate BMC or server references are rejected consistently. The default controller resync interval is now 10 minutes.
  • Removed Capabilities

    • Readiness gates and completion-condition coordination are no longer available for BMC and BIOS settings or version resources.

Walkthrough

The pull request changes telemetry subscription policy and reporting, removes readiness-gate APIs and controller behavior, and updates firmware-update and hardware-management flows. It also changes local-file exclusions, dependencies, and test setup.

Changes: Telemetry subscriptions and test-event reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Subscription policy and configuration
internal/telemetry/subscriptions/*
Configuration replaces eventBasedHardware with hardware exclusions and test-event overrides. Validation and matching use the new rules, including optional firmware floors.
EventService probing and subscription reconciliation
internal/telemetry/runtime/*, internal/telemetry/subscriptions/*, internal/telemetry/sink/prometheus/subscriptionsink*
The client probes EventService capabilities and can discover test MessageIds from registries. Reconciliation tracks subscription outcomes, persists discovered IDs, and records status in a Prometheus gauge.
Discovery and verification integration
internal/discovery/*, cmd/main.go, hack/verify-test-events/main.go
Discovery omits subscribed BMCs and labels remaining BMCs with their subscription reason. The verification tool can probe for a MessageId when enabled. Discovery registration now occurs with or without telemetry.

Readiness-gate API removal

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resource API and generated schemas
api/*, config/crd/bases/*
Settings and version resources remove readiness-gate and completion-condition fields. Version templates declare their fields directly, and settings schemas require a non-empty version.
API and workflow documentation
docs/api-reference/api.md, docs/concepts/*
The API reference and concept pages remove readiness-gate and completion-condition descriptions. The readiness-gates concept page is deleted.

Controller and webhook behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Settings reconciliation
internal/controller/baseboard/bmcsettings_controller*, internal/controller/system/biossettings_controller*
Settings reconcilers remove readiness-gate checks and Server completion-condition updates. They also change version comparisons, maintenance cleanup, and Server-event enqueueing.
Version reconciliation and fixtures
internal/controller/baseboard/bmcversion_controller*, internal/controller/baseboard/bmcversionset_controller_test.go, internal/controller/system/biosversion_controller*, internal/controller/system/biosversionset_controller_test.go, internal/telemetry/sink/prometheus/firmwarestate_test.go
Version reconcilers remove readiness-gate handling and change cleanup and event mapping. Controller and metric fixtures use direct template fields.
Duplicate-reference validation and gate utilities
internal/webhook/*, internal/utils/helper.go, internal/controller/readinessgateschain_test.go, internal/controller/suite_test.go
Webhook duplicate-reference checks no longer allow exceptions based on readiness gates. Shared gate helpers and readiness-gate test infrastructure are removed.

Firmware-update flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Deadline, progress, and scheduled-job handling
cmd/main.go, internal/controller/system/firmware_*, internal/controller/system/firmwareupdate_controller*, internal/controller/system/suite_test.go
The scheduled-job power-on timeout configuration and Dell recovery path are removed. In-progress handling checks deadlines before vendor logic, and progress timestamps update on each progress call.

Hardware-management client behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Client selection and reconciliation
internal/hwmgr/*, internal/controller/vendorconsole/console_controller.go
The Fujitsu no-op client and console-detection interface are removed. Console reconciliation proceeds when no central console is reported. Basic Auth requests no longer set the Accept header.

Repository and test setup changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
Local files, dependencies, and mock endpoint
.gitignore, go.mod, internal/controller/maintenance/suite_test.go
The ignore rules add local verification server and configuration files. Dependency versions change, and the maintenance test mock port changes.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review a5322

Firmware updates that stall on a stuck BMC job may never hit their progress deadline. BIOSSettings that omit a maintenance policy can fail to request server maintenance. Both should be fixed before merge. Telemetry test-event discovery and the subscription status metric also have narrower gaps.

can skip reconciliation for that BMC. Return empty capabilities only when the
EventService is explicitly confirmed absent.
- Around line 405-411: Update the MessageId construction in the code that calls

`r.discoveredMsgId` from `discoveredMsgIdAnnotation` and skip discovery when an
ID is already cached, while preserving override and interval checks. Pass `ctx`

- AddTo now takes *Options so ActiveSubscriptions/UnsubscribedBMCReasons
callbacks are visible to the caller (cmd/main.go); update all call sites
  and tests to pass &opts
- ProbeEventService propagates EventService() errors instead of silently
returning empty capabilities, preventing spurious subscription teardowns
  on transient BMC failures
- discoverTestMessageId sorts message keys for deterministic selection and
trims RegistryVersion to major.minor only, matching the Redfish MessageId
  format (prefix.major.minor.key)
- reconcileOne seeds discoveredMsgId from the BMC annotation before
computing needsDiscovery, skipping registry walks when an ID is cached
- reconcileOne clears subscribedBMCs at the top of each pass; only stores
it after ensureSubscriptions confirms both subscriptions are present
- ensureSubscriptions returns bool; subscribedBMCs.Store and
ReasonSubscribed are recorded only on success
- Probe-failure reason preserves ReasonExcluded for excluded BMCs instead
  of overwriting it with probe_failed

Should we use a map instead of a list? it would mean we can define known servers, but it also would allow end users to add/override easier?

do you mean, keyed by arbitrary name (e.g. map[string]TestEventOverrideEntry where entry has vendor/models)?

Current array:

testEventOverrides:
  - vendor: "Dell Inc."
    models: ["*"]
    testMessageId: "FAN.1.0.FAN0001"

Map alternative (keyed by a name):

testEventOverrides:
  dell:
    vendor: "Dell Inc."
    models: ["*"]
    testMessageId: "FAN.1.0.FAN0001"
  my-custom-dell:
    vendor: "Dell Inc."
    models: ["PowerEdge R750"]
    testMessageId: "Storage.1.0.DriveFailed"

I think a map has not many benefits?!

testEventOverrides:
  dell:
    vendor: "Dell Inc."
    models: ["*"]
    testMessageId: "FAN.1.0.FAN0001"
  dell-r750:
    vendor: "Dell Inc."
    models: ["PowerEdge R750"]
    testMessageId: "Storage.1.0.DriveFailed"

if we define those in the values, and an end user wants to add too the overrides, they could use a values.yaml for example:

testEventOverrides:
  dell-r840:
    vendor: "Dell Inc."
    models: ["PowerEdge R840"]
    testMessageId: "Storage.1.0.DriveFailed"

i.e. they wouldn't have to supply the whole list again as helm does a merge on maps, where as it does a replace on lists.

Removes the static eventBasedHardware allowlist. Every BMC with a working
Redfish EventService is now subscribed by default.

New opt-out schema: excludeHardware (suppress specific vendor/model/firmware
ranges) and testEventOverrides (per-vendor test event params; testMessageId is
now optional — auto-discovered at runtime).

ProbeEventService added to the Client interface: checks
EventService.ServiceEnabled / SubmitTestEventTarget, then walks
EventService.RegistryPrefixes → /redfish/v1/Registries to auto-discover a
viable TestMessageId. Result cached in memory and persisted as BMC annotation
telemetry.metal.ironcore.dev/discovered-test-message-id.

/sd/bmcs SD endpoint now omits BMCs with active push subscriptions so the
external redfish-exporter does not double-scrape them.
Handler.SubscribedBMCs func wired from subReconciler.ActiveSubscriptions.

hack/verify-test-events: --probe flag added for auto-discovery; uses
IsExcluded / TestOverrideFor for the new schema.

.gitignore: covers servers.yaml and config.yaml in hack/verify-test-events
(may contain real BMC credentials).

Fix ActiveSubscriptions output by taking *Options in AddTo so callbacks
reach cmd/main.go. ProbeEventService now propagates errors to prevent
spurious subscription teardowns. discoverTestMessageId sorts keys and trims
RegistryVersion to major.minor. reconcileOne seeds discoveredMsgId from BMC
annotation before needsDiscovery check. subscribedBMCs is cleared at the top
of reconcileOne and only stored after ensureSubscriptions confirms success.
ensureSubscriptions returns bool. Probe-failure reason preserves excluded for
excluded BMCs.

Prometheus test-result gauge reports 1 for success and 0 for failure.

Test files from our branch used `Version`, `Image`, `ServerMaintenancePolicy`
directly in BMCVersionTemplate/BIOSVersionTemplate struct literals. After
restoring origin/main's embedded struct approach (api.VersionTemplate inline),
those fields must be accessed via `VersionTemplate: api.VersionTemplate{...}`.

Also adds missing imports to firmwareupdate_controller_test.go:
context, fmt, time, conditionutils, bmc, schemas, constants.

…nterval

- patchProgress now only advances LastProgressTime when actual progress
occurs (state transition, condition update, or DellStatus field change),
restoring checkProgressDeadline's ability to detect stuck jobs in
  pollRepositoryUpdate and trackComponentJobs

- Add PollingInterval field to FirmwareUpdateReconciler (default 2m) so
active firmware polling (component tracking, repository update polls)
uses a short interval independent of the 10m ResyncInterval

- Regenerate docs/api-reference/api.md and gofmt fixes

…er tests

The mock Redfish server was recreated in SetupTest's BeforeEach on the
same fixed port (:8300) for every test spec. Under CI the previous test's
250ms shutdown window occasionally overlapped the next test's bind attempt,
causing "address already in use" and a BeforeEach timeout on the 7th spec.

Move the Redfish mock server creation into BeforeSuite (started once for
the whole suite lifetime), matching the pattern used by the baseboard/system
packages. SetupTest now registers a no-op manager.RunnableFunc that simply
waits for the manager's context to cancel.

Port 8300 is already used by internal/controller/suite_test.go.
Running go test ./... executes both packages in parallel, causing
an address-already-in-use race that made tests fail non-deterministically.

Restore the original port 8400 that was in place before the telemetry
commit accidentally changed it to 8300.

- Remove ConfigLoader from FirmwareUpdateReconciler; fields are now
direct struct members (ResyncInterval, PollingInterval, MaxRepositoryPasses,
  MinBMCResetInterval, ScheduledJobPowerOnTimeout, DefaultFailedAutoRetryCount)
- Remove repositoryCheckInterval ConfigMap-overridable helper and the
periodic drift-detection deferral logic in processRepositoryCheck
- Remove duplicate ConfigKey const from runtime.go (now defined in
  config_loader.go)
- Add maxRepositoryPassesLimit const, --max-repository-passes flag and
  --scheduled-job-power-on-timeout flag to cmd/main.go; remove
  firmwareupdate-config-name/namespace flags
- Add BMCUserSet and BMCUserRotation controllers to cmd/main.go
- Update configMapCacheByObject to variadic namedConfigMapRef pattern
- Add PollingInterval to test suite setup
