Proposed Changes

  • Move the tunnable to configMap. provide a generic way to support it across Controllers
  • add a staleness timeout for repository dry run job during completed state to avoid too many jobs on BMC

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Firmware-update settings can be supplied through a ConfigMap and updated while the service is running. Supported settings include retry limits, timing intervals, repository-pass limits, repository-check behavior, and scheduled-job timeouts.
    • Repository-pass limits and scheduled-job timeouts are configured through the ConfigMap rather than command-line options.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Periodic repository checks now wait for the configured interval before running again, while generation changes can trigger an immediate check.
    • Check progress and completion status are reported more consistently, and in-progress checks continue to respect their deadline.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds a generic ConfigMap-backed loader and firmware-update configuration parsing and validation. Startup can register a firmware-update ConfigMap, and the reconciler reads settings through loader-backed accessors. Repository-check timing and status-condition handling also change.

Changes: ConfigMap configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Generic loader and telemetry migration
internal/configloader/loader.go, internal/telemetry/runtime/*
The generic loader watches ConfigMap additions and updates, parses configuration, and retains the last successfully loaded value after reload failures. The telemetry runtime now uses this loader.
Firmware-update configuration contract
internal/controller/config/common.go, internal/controller/config/firmwareupdateconfig.go
Firmware-update configuration defines defaults and optional fields. Strict YAML parsing and validation check the API version and configured value bounds.
Startup and cache wiring
cmd/main.go
Startup accepts a firmware-update ConfigMap name and namespace, resolves an omitted namespace from POD_NAMESPACE, and registers the loader when both values are set. Cache setup uses named ConfigMap references and name selectors where possible. The max-repository-passes and scheduled-job timeout flags are removed.
Reconciler configuration and repository-check handling
internal/controller/system/firmwareupdate_controller.go, internal/controller/system/firmware_dell.go, internal/controller/system/firmwareupdate_controller_test.go, internal/controller/system/suite_test.go
The reconciler reads configurable values through loader-backed accessors. Repository checks use the configured interval, update in-progress and completion conditions, and preserve existing conditions when already completed. Tests set firmware-update settings through the loader.

The new periodic repository check for Completed firmware updates may never run, because nothing schedules a reconcile after a check is deferred. Return a requeue from the deferral branch before merging. Deployments that set the old FirmwareUpdate CLI flags will also silently fall back to defaults, so the ConfigMap migration should be documented.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names two changes: a staleness timeout for the repository update check job, and reading parameters from ConfigMap-backed config. The changeset covers both. The raw summary shows a new generic configloader, a ConfigMap-backed FirmwareUpdate config, and Dell repository-check changes that add a completion-state staleness handling. The title is specific and lists the main changes, though it is long at 91 characters and uses the abbreviation 'TO' for timeout, which a reader may not parse at once.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description has two bullet points. They cover moving the tunable to a ConfigMap with a generic mechanism for controllers, and adding a staleness timeout for the repository dry-run job in the Completed state. The template's 'Fixes #' line is empty, and no issue number is given. The bullets do not explain the design, the new config keys, or the behavior change for existing deployments. The description is mostly complete for a PR of this size, but it is brief.

Resolution

Consider adding the issue number on the 'Fixes #' line if one exists. Consider also listing the new ConfigMap keys, their defaults, and the removed flags (max-repository-passes and the scheduled-job power-on timeout flag), because operators must update their deployments.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 9 files.

changes to proceed immediately; when a Completed update is intentionally
deferred by this gate, refresh its LastProgressTime. Keep the existing deadline
protection for periodic checks and do not exempt Completed updates from the
deadline.

- Line 140: Avoid calling r.Status().Patch on every firmware deferral when it
only updates the heartbeat timestamp; skip that patch unless meaningful status
changes. Preserve the configured resync interval and ensure actual firmware
status changes are still persisted.
- Line 139: In the Dell deferral path that updates LastProgressTime, preserve
the progress refresh but record completion in a separate timestamp set when the
update first enters Completed. Update FirmwareUpdateSet.handleTTL to use that
stable completion timestamp so periodic repository-check deferrals cannot reset
the TTL clock.

should we add at least a Kubernetes event and a metric for config_load_failures_total or similar? otherwise it is should a log and more difficult to understand for users
