Proposed Changes

Add events and alert to config loader to expose the errors outside the logs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Failed configuration reloads are now tracked with a metric labeled by configuration namespace and name.
    • When available, a Warning event is recorded for configuration lookup, missing-key, and parsing failures, helping operators identify reload problems.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Configuration reload failures now provide additional operational signals while preserving the original error and existing successful reload behavior.

Walkthrough

The ConfigMap loader now counts lookup, missing-key, and parse failures, and can emit a Warning Event for the affected ConfigMap. The FirmwareUpdate and subscription configuration loaders receive the manager’s EventRecorder. Successful reload behavior is unchanged.

Changes: ConfigMap reload reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Failure tracking and reporting
internal/configloader/loader.go
The loader registers a Prometheus counter labelled by namespace and name. It increments the counter for ConfigMap lookup, missing-key, and parse failures, optionally emits a Warning Event, and returns the original error.
EventRecorder wiring
cmd/main.go, internal/telemetry/runtime/runtime.go
Both loader constructions pass the manager’s EventRecorder.

Grant permissions for events.k8s.io Events.

GetEventRecorder uses events.k8s.io/v1, but both deployment roles grant create and patch only for core events. Add the same verbs for events.k8s.io Events. Add the corresponding kubebuilder marker and regenerate the RBAC manifests.

Pass the fetched ConfigMap to the event recorder.

recordFailure creates a ConfigMap without a UID. The recorder copies that empty UID into the Event's Regarding reference. kubectl describe configmap queries events for the real ConfigMap UID, so these events do not match.

Pass cm for missing-key and parse failures. Lookup failures occur before a ConfigMap is available. This Loader has no owner reference, so retain the current namespace/name fallback for those failures unless the API is extended to accept a real fallback object.

Bound the Event note to 1024 bytes before emitting it.

Parse embeds the full raw ConfigMap value in its error. recordFailure passes that error text as the Event note. An events.k8s.io/v1 Event whose note exceeds 1024 bytes is rejected by the API server. A large invalid configuration can therefore make the Warning Event fail. The failure counter still increments and the error is still logged, so only the Event is lost.

Truncate the note in recordFailure. Add const maxEventNoteBytes = 1024 and import strings if loader.go does not already import it.
