Summary

network_config.base_url sits alongside config fields that already accept a SecretVar reference (ca_cert_pem, proxy.url, the Ollama/SGL key URLs), but a "base_url": "env.SOME_VAR" was never resolved: it was passed through and dialed as a literal hostname. Requests to that provider fail to connect with no diagnostic pointing at the real problem.

This makes base_url a SecretVar like the other reference-capable fields, so an upstream URL can be kept out of committed config the same way credentials already can.

Changes

  • NetworkConfig.BaseURL is now *schemas.SecretVar (json:"base_url"), the same shape as CACertPEM and ProxyConfig.URL. SecretVar.UnmarshalJSON handles plain URLs, env., and vault. references; MarshalJSON emits SecretVarAsString(nc.BaseURL), so config-store persistence, ProviderConfig hashing, and API responses stay reference-shaped. No shadow field.
  • Every read site goes through BaseURL.GetValue(): all providers (including databricks and github-copilot, which landed on dev after this PR was opened), the OpenAI/ElevenLabs realtime paths, and the provider HTTP handler's ValidateExternalURL check.
  • The per-provider default-URL / trailing-slash block in every constructor is folded into one providerUtils.NormalizeBaseURL(&config.NetworkConfig, defaultURL) helper ("" for ollama, sgl, vllm, databricks, and github-copilot, whose base URL is optional). It clones the SecretVar before trimming, so a pointer shared with a config-store copy is never mutated in place, and the env./vault. reference survives normalization.
  • Fail-loud at decode on a reference that resolves to an empty value: network_config.base_url references "env.X" but it resolved to an empty value. Same fail-closed stance ConfigureTLS takes for ca_cert_pem; the alternative is dialing an empty host. Surrounding whitespace in a resolved value is trimmed.
  • The ollama/sgl key-backfill migration copies the SecretVar into the key URL (reference preserved) instead of wrapping the resolved string.
  • config.schema.json: base_url documents the reference form and drops "format": "uri", which an env. reference would not satisfy. The wire form is still a string, so the UI types are unaffected.
  • One line in docs/quickstart/gateway/provider-configuration.mdx.
  • Review follow-ups (third commit): NetworkConfig.Redacted clones BaseURL and masks the resolved value when it came from a reference (literal URLs stay readable for the UI); providerUtils.LoggableURL keeps a reference-resolved base URL out of the four Gemini batch debug logs.
  • UI (second commit): the provider network form, the provider-form schema, and the custom-provider sheet previously rejected anything that was not a URL. One shared isValidBaseURL predicate (http(s) URL or a non-empty env./vault. reference) now backs all four validation sites via baseURLSchema, and the base URL inputs describe the reference form. Wire shape unchanged.

Revision history: v1 hand-rolled os.LookupEnv prefix handling; v2 resolved through SecretVar but kept BaseURL a string with a hidden retained reference (reviewer: a workaround); v3 (this) converts the field itself and updates the callers, per review.

Type of change

  • Bug fix

Affected areas

  • Core (Go)
  • Framework (configstore migration)
  • Transports (provider handler, config.schema.json)
  • Docs
  • UI

How to test

# in core/, framework/, transports/ (go.work via `make setup-workspace`)
go build ./... && go vet ./...

cd core && go test -count=1 ./schemas/ ./providers/...
cd transports && go test -count=1 ./bifrost-http/lib/
cd framework && go test -count=1 ./configstore/

# UI
cd ui && npm ci --ignore-scripts && npx vitest run lib/utils/validation.test.ts
  • TestNetworkConfig_BaseURLSecretRef (core/schemas): literal passthrough and round-trip; absent stays nil and is omitted; env. resolves, keeps its reference, and round-trips as the reference (never the resolved URL); whitespace trimmed; unset, empty, whitespace-only env. and unresolvable vault. fail loud.
  • isSecretReference / isValidBaseURL (ui/lib/utils/validation.test.ts): accepts http(s) URLs and env./vault. references; rejects bare hosts, non-http schemes, empty references, and https://env.example.com-style lookalikes.
  • TestNetworkConfig_Redacted_BaseURL (core/schemas) and TestLoggableURL (core/providers/utils): redacted copies clone and mask reference-resolved base URLs, and debug-log rendering hides the resolved host.
  • TestNormalizeBaseURL (core/providers/utils): default only when unset; trailing slashes trimmed; env. reference retained; caller's SecretVar cloned, not mutated; no-op with no default.

Verified locally on Go 1.27 (toolchain auto) against current dev @ 03ab39186: core, framework, transports, and all plugins/* build and vet clean; core schemas/providers tests, framework/configstore tests, and transports/bifrost-http/lib tests pass, with one exception: TestGenerateMCPClientHash_RuntimeVsMigrationParity fails identically on a clean dev checkout and is unrelated to this change. validate-schema-sync.sh reports the same three errors on dev and on this branch. UI: vitest passes for the touched file (the one failing test file in the suite, logs/views/columns.test.ts, fails identically on dev); tsc --noEmit reports no errors in the touched files (the 97 route-typing errors it reports are identical on dev); oxlint and oxfmt --check are clean for the touched code.

Breaking changes

  • Yes, for Go consumers of the core module only

NetworkConfig.BaseURL changes type from string to *schemas.SecretVar; downstream Go code reads it with GetValue() and sets it with schemas.NewSecretVar(...). The JSON wire form (config.json, config store, HTTP API) is unchanged: a plain URL string still works, and env./vault. strings that were previously dialed literally now resolve.

Related issues

Found while migrating a downstream deployment (LaneTally) from transports/v1.5.16 to transports/v2.0.0.

Security considerations

Lets operators keep upstream endpoints out of committed config and out of the config store, using the same reference mechanism already trusted for credentials. The resolved URL never appears in marshaled output while the reference still resolves to it.

Checklist

  • I read docs/contributing/README.md and followed the guidelines
  • I added/updated tests where appropriate
  • I verified builds succeed (Go)

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Custom provider base URLs now support environment-variable and vault references. References are preserved when configurations are read back, and provider forms and configuration documentation describe the supported formats.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Empty or invalid secret-backed URLs are rejected, and validation errors avoid exposing resolved values.
    • Secret-backed URLs are redacted in logs and masked in copied configurations.
    • Provider requests consistently use configured base URLs, including secret references.
    • Configuration migrations retain secret references, including references that cannot currently be resolved.

NetworkConfig.BaseURL now uses SecretVar and accepts literal URLs or supported secret references. Provider code resolves the configured value for requests. Serialization, validation, migration, logging, and UI configuration handle the secret-backed representation.

Changes: Secret-backed provider base URLs

Base URL contract and shared helpers
core/schemas/provider.go, core/schemas/serialization_test.go, core/providers/utils/*
BaseURL now uses *SecretVar. Serialization preserves references, rejects secret-backed URLs that resolve to empty or whitespace-only values, and redacts secret-backed values in copies. Shared helpers normalize URLs and sanitize log and passthrough errors.
Provider request URL resolution
core/providers/*/*.go, core/providers/*/*_test.go, core/internal/*, core/bifrost.go, core/bifrost_test.go, plugins/governance/*
Provider constructors use shared URL normalization, and request paths resolve URLs with GetValue(). Provider test fixtures now use SecretVar. Error and log paths redact secret-backed base URLs.
Validation, migration, and configuration interfaces

Transport and UI validation accept HTTP(S) URLs or supported secret references. Secret-backed validation errors identify references without exposing resolved values. Migration retains unresolved references and refuses rollback that would drop generated URL columns. UI and gateway documentation describe reference inputs.

Possibly related issues

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 059ec

Malformed chart URLs can pass validation, and one unresolved provider reference can make other database-configured providers unavailable after startup. Resolve or explicitly accept these risks before merging.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to ff553

Secret references are preserved in configuration, and existing destination controls remain in place. However, realtime connection failures can pass resolved endpoint URLs into client-facing errors, creating a confidentiality risk when upstream URLs contain sensitive information.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Resolved secret-backed realtime endpoints enter client-facing connection errors. OpenAI and ElevenLabs now construct realtime URLs from BaseURL.GetValue(). A fresh upstream dial failure embeds that endpoint in the pool error, and the realtime handler passes err.Error() to the client error writer. A caller permitted to use the affected provider could therefore learn its resolved host and endpoint path without configuration-edit privileges. Management validation and configuration redaction do not cover this runtime error boundary. The error behavior predates the PR, but receiving resolved secret-backed endpoints is new.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The retained concern is bounded to secret-backed endpoints used by affected realtime providers and callers allowed to invoke them. The demonstrated error construction exposes the selected endpoint, not arbitrary environment variables, unrelated vault entries, or provider authorization headers.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — With a secret-backed realtime base URL configured, a permitted caller initiates a connection. If a fresh upstream dial or handshake fails, the pool formats the resolved endpoint into its error and the handler forwards that text to the client error writer. Successful connections and pool-capacity failures do not follow this endpoint-bearing error branch. Final wire serialization was not independently inspected.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The management boundary retains genuine-authentication requirements for new or changed dial targets before destination validation. Its secret-aware diagnostics remove resolved URL details. These controls address configuration changes and validation responses, not the separate realtime runtime-error path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Secret provenance survives configuration normalization and persistence but is reduced to an ordinary string at the realtime transport boundary. Consequently, configuration-level redaction helpers cannot automatically protect downstream endpoint-bearing errors.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve endpoint secrecy metadata through the realtime transport boundary, or use endpoint-free client diagnostics for upstream connection failures. Keep detailed internal diagnostics subject to the same reference-aware rendering policy.

Use a table-driven test for the base_url cases.

The four subtests repeat the same setup and assertion flow. Store the JSON input, environment state, expected URL, and expected error in a test table. This keeps coverage consistent when another resolution case is added.

As per coding guidelines, **/*.go tests should use table-driven coverage for behavior changes.

@coderabbitai The pre-merge Docstring Coverage check reports 33.33% over 3 functions in 2 files, but every declaration this diff touches carries an identifier-prefixed Go doc comment: NetworkConfig.UnmarshalJSON and NetworkConfig.MarshalJSON in core/schemas/provider.go, and TestNetworkConfig_BaseURLSecretRef in core/schemas/serialization_test.go. Please list the exact function declarations the check considers undocumented so I can fix the right ones. Do not trigger another full review.

@coderabbitai ignore pre-merge checks

Reason: the only failing pre-merge check is the Docstring Coverage warning (66.67%, 3 functions). Every declaration this diff touches carries an identifier-prefixed Go doc comment: NetworkConfig.UnmarshalJSON and NetworkConfig.MarshalJSON (both pre-existing comments, extended in this PR to describe the base_url reference handling) and TestNetworkConfig_BaseURLSecretRef. Two full reviews after the docstring additions moved the metric from 33.33% to 66.67% and no further, and the earlier request to name the undocumented declaration was not answered, so the residual is a detector false negative on a documented function, the same shape as the one recorded on PR 5985.

@valentinyanakiev I found no undocumented declaration among the three reported functions.

The available Docstring Coverage output contains only the aggregate result. It does not identify a specific declaration. The repository also has no local Docstring Coverage configuration that exposes per-declaration attribution.

Based on the source, the 33.33% result is a detector false negative or an attribution problem. I did not trigger a review.

Rebased onto current dev @ 3585a9c (no merge commits, single commit, DCO signed-off). Head is now 7719fb5. Re-verified on the rebased tree with the module-directed toolchain (go 1.27.0 via GOTOOLCHAIN): go build ./... (core), go vet ./schemas/..., targeted go test ./schemas/... -run 'NetworkConfig|Serializ|EnvVar|SecretVar', and full go test ./providers/... — all pass. The earlier maintainer request (use the SecretVar/GetValue machinery) is implemented in this head: NetworkConfig.UnmarshalJSON resolves via NewSecretVar/GetValue and round-trips the reference through baseURLRef/MarshalJSON. Maintainer re-review is pending.

@BearTS ready for another look — the implementation is reworked onto schemas.SecretVar as you suggested.

NetworkConfig.UnmarshalJSON now goes IsSecretRef → NewSecretVar → GetValue(), so vault. references work alongside env. for free instead of the hand-rolled prefix check.

Two decisions worth flagging, since they go slightly beyond the suggestion:

  • BaseURL stays a string on the struct. There are ~250 read sites across providers, transports and the config store, and the runtime contract ("BaseURL holds the dialable URL") is unchanged, so none of them have to move.
  • The originating SecretVar is retained on an unexported baseURLRef field so MarshalJSON emits the reference (env.VAR) rather than the resolved URL. Without it, config-store persistence and API responses would write back the resolved endpoint and defeat the point of the indirection. This mirrors how CACertPEM round-trips through SecretVarAsString.

An unresolved or empty reference is still a fail-loud config error rather than SecretVar's usual silent-empty, matching the fail-closed stance core/providers/utils already takes for proxy.url: a bad provider key surfaces as a 401, but a bad base_url would otherwise be dialed as the literal reference string.

Tests cover literal passthrough, env. resolution, the reference round-trip (and that the resolved URL never appears in marshaled output), programmatic reassignment, unset/empty/whitespace-only, and an unresolvable vault. — plus CodeRabbit's host-environment isolation nit on the unset case.

@BearTS @akshaydeo @TejasGhatte gentle nudge on this one.

The change you asked for on 2 Sep is in: base_url now resolves through schemas.SecretVar → GetValue() exactly like ca_cert_pem and proxy.url, so env. and vault. references both work. The head (7719fb5d) is rebased on current dev, single commit, DCO signed, all three checks green, and CodeRabbit has re-approved.

The standing "changes requested" review is now the only thing blocking the merge button. @BearTS, could you re-review or dismiss it when you have a moment? For context, this is one of the focused PRs carved out of #5985 (opened 9 Aug), so the underlying fix has been waiting a while. Happy to adjust anything else you'd like to see.

Hey @valentinyanakiev , I would not recommend using this workaround, but instead convert the original baseUrl in secretVar and updating the callers

valentinyanakiev and others added 18 commits October 15, 2026 00:35
The forward migration moves each ollama/sgl base_url onto a generated key and
clears network_config.base_url, so afterwards the URL exists only in ollama_url
/ sgl_url. The rollback dropped those columns, which destroyed the last copy of
the endpoint and left the generated keys behind empty; a later forward run would
then mint a second default key beside the first.

Failing the rollback with a reason follows the convention already used by
add_warp_api_key_id_column and four other one-way migrations in this file: the
columns are additive and older binaries ignore them, so refusing is safe.

Admitting env./vault. references meant dropping "format": "uri" from base_url,
because a reference is not a URI - but that also stopped rejecting a plain
malformed value like "not-a-url", which then reached request handling instead of
failing validation.

base_url is now an anyOf over the two things it may legitimately be: a literal
URI, or a reference matching the same pattern isSecretReference (ui) and
IsSecretRef (core) already enforce.

…path

dev added a models-catalog URL and a decision_test fixture that build
NetworkConfig.BaseURL as a string, which no longer compiles now that it is a
*SecretVar. Converted both the same way as every other provider.

…se_url

The prefix strip handles the appended case, but a rewritten URL still fell
through to scheme-and-host removal, and the rest of that path can carry parts of
the resolved base. Gemini's download endpoint splices "/download" in front of the
version segment, so a base_url of https://host/tenants/acme/v1beta produces
https://host/tenants/acme/download/v1beta/... - no longer a prefix, and the
tenant segment was being logged.

There is no reliable way to tell which of the remaining segments came from the
reference, so the fallback now renders the reference alone.

…s to nothing

Reported by @coderabbitai on maximhq#6735. The ollama/sgl backfill decoded the stored
network_config through NetworkConfig.UnmarshalJSON, which deliberately fails
loud when an env./vault. reference resolves to an empty value. That is the right
stance at serve time, where the alternative is dialing an empty host, but inside
a migration the error is caught and turned into a skip: no key created, the old
JSON left in place, and a log line nobody reads. An operator whose base_url is
env.OLLAMA_URL, with the variable absent from the migration's own environment,
silently kept an unmigrated provider.

Moving a declaration is not the place to validate it, so base_url is now decoded
on its own and a present reference migrates on the strength of the reference
alone. A plain URL still has to be non-empty to be worth carrying, and an absent
one is still skipped.

TestBaseURLBackfillMigratesUnresolvedSecretReference pins all four cases and
asserts the old path's error directly, so the reason this decode is separate
cannot be refactored away by accident.

…lues

validateProviderBaseURLShape returned early for an env./vault.-backed
base_url, so credentials, a query, or a fragment could reach the stored
provider config through the indirection. ValidateExternalURL does not
cover those components, so nothing else rejected them.

The check now runs on the value the reference resolves to. That value is
a secret, so a rejection names the reference rather than echoing what it
resolved to, and the url.Parse error is only wrapped for a literal.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The ollama/sgl backfill decodes base_url on its own so an env./vault.
reference migrates whether or not it resolves. That decode was dead code
behind a failing read: the rows were fetched as []tables.TableProvider,
whose AfterFind decodes the whole NetworkConfig, and
NetworkConfig.UnmarshalJSON fails loud on a reference resolving to
nothing. The error surfaced on Find and aborted the migration before any
row was examined.

The read is now plain columns. Also corrects the rollback explanation:
the forward migration creates a key and saves no provider row, so
network_config.base_url stays where it is -- dropping ollama_url/sgl_url
would strand the generated keys rather than lose the endpoint.

BuildPassthroughURL quotes the base URL in its error and the passthrough
routes hand that to the caller as a 400. That was harmless while base_url
was always a literal; now that it can resolve from an env./vault.
reference, a malformed resolved value would be disclosed.

BuildPassthroughURLFromSecret wraps it for the SecretVar-backed call
sites (anthropic, gemini, openai, runware): a literal keeps its
diagnostic, since it is operator-visible configuration, and a reference
is named instead of echoed. A caller-supplied UpstreamURL is the caller's
own value and still reports verbatim.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…on errors

Third place a resolved secret could reach the caller. ValidateExternalURL
reports the hostname it resolved and the DNS error behind it, and both the
create and update handlers wrap that into a 400 -- so a base_url that
arrived as an env./vault. reference had its resolved host disclosed.

externalURLErrorForClient names the reference instead. A literal keeps its
diagnostic, since the operator can already see that value, and an absent
base_url falls back to the underlying error.

Red-proven: without the redaction the 400 reads "failed to resolve
hostname: lookup resolved-secret-host.invalid ... no such host".

The chart's values.schema.json still required format: uri on
network_config.base_url, and Helm validates values before rendering, so a
base_url of env.UPSTREAM_URL or vault.path was rejected at install time with no
way around it - extraEnv or envFrom cannot help, because the value never gets
as far as the container.

Same anyOf as transports/config.schema.json, with the same reference pattern, so
the two schemas agree on what the field accepts.

(cherry picked from commit dbcda18)
helm lint cannot catch a regression here: the chart workflow runs Helm 4,
whose validator does not assert format, so the field could go back to
URI-only and still lint clean while Helm 3 users could no longer install.

The test compiles the chart schema with santhosh-tekuri/jsonschema's
AssertFormat, reproducing Helm 3's gojsonschema behaviour, and pins both
directions: a literal URL and the env./vault. forms are accepted, while a
reference with no name, a whitespace reference, a non-URI string and a
non-string value are rejected.

Scoped to the chart deliberately. The matching anyOf in
transports/config.schema.json arrives with maximhq#6735 and is pinned there;
asserting the two agree from here would fail until that lands, which is
the coupling the split exists to avoid.

The redaction threw away the diagnosis along with the value: an operator
could not tell a bad scheme from a DNS failure from a blocked private
address.

Only two of ValidateExternalURL's eight failures repeat the URL back --
the parse error quotes it and the DNS error names the hostname. Those two
are trimmed to their reason; the other six name a class (empty, scheme,
missing hostname, unspecified / link-local / private address) and are
passed through whole, alongside the reference name.

The backfill comment claimed it clears base_url from network_config. The
loop reads provider rows and creates one key; it never writes a provider
row, so network_config.base_url stays put -- which is exactly the premise
the non-rollbackable Rollback below reasons from. Make the comment agree.

The rebase onto dev picked up the cloudflare provider and perplexity's
decisions path, both written against the string base_url. Convert them the
same way as the rest: NormalizeBaseURL for the constructor default/trim,
GetValue() at the call site.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The rebase onto dev picked up three more places written against the string
base_url:

- replicate's file-list cursor check. The helper now takes the SecretVar, and
names the reference on a parse failure instead of letting url.Parse put the
resolved URL in the warning log through %w.
- governance's providerEndpoint, which compares the endpoint a provider sends
to. It resolves, so a literal and a reference pointing at the same endpoint
  compare equal.
- eight test call sites across ollama, openai, replicate, governance and the
  transports integrations, converted via schemas.NewSecretVar.

go vet is clean across core, framework, transports, plugins/governance and cli.

ValidateExternalURL's scheme failure appends "got: <scheme>", and a resolved
value's scheme is as much of that value as its host: a base_url reference
resolving to tenant-secret123://example.com read the scheme straight back to the
caller. The redaction list enumerated the value-bearing failures and had missed
this one -- the comment even claimed the scheme error carried nothing resolved.

Add it, so only the fixed "only https and http schemes are allowed" reason
survives, and correct the comment. The other failures (empty, missing hostname,
unspecified / link-local / private address) do name a class and stay whole.

Red-proven: without the new entry the test reads back
"...resolved from env.BIFROST_TEST_EXTERNAL_URL: only https and http schemes are
allowed, got: tenant-secret123".

TestBaseURLBackfillMigratesUnresolvedSecretReference covers the decode through
a mirror of the migration's own logic, and
TestBaseURLBackfillReadBypassesTheAfterFindHook covers the plain-column read.
Neither calls migrationAddOllamaSGLConfigColumns, so the leg that carries the
endpoint forward -- tx.Create of a key whose OllamaKeyConfig.URL holds the
reference rather than its resolved value -- had no coverage, and the mirror
could drift from the code it mirrors without anything turning red.

The new test provisions config_keys without ollama_url/sgl_url (the shape an
upgrading deployment has), seeds ollama with a reference deliberately absent
from the environment, sgl with a literal, and openai as an out-of-scope
control, then runs the registered migration and asserts the columns appear,
the reference is stored as a reference with an empty resolved value, the
literal is stored as a literal, no key is minted for openai, and a replay does
not mint a duplicate.

Red-proven two ways against the real migration: dropping IsFromSecret() from
the skip condition creates no ollama key at all, and storing
NewSecretVar(GetValue()) instead of Clone() leaves OllamaKeyConfig nil.

@BearTS rebased onto current dev per your 6 Oct LGTM, and gemini.go and openai/live.go now resolve BaseURL through GetValue(). Checks are green. Could you approve it, which also clears your 28 Sep changes-requested review, and merge? This is my last nudge here.

Redact resolved hosts from upstream network errors.

DNS failures pass the original error into NewBifrostUpstreamConnectionError, and ErrorField.MarshalJSON serializes that error string. The string can include the resolved hostname.

This behavior is pre-existing for literal URLs and becomes reachable for secret-backed URLs in this PR. Apply redaction at a shared boundary that covers both MakeRequestWithContext and DoStreamingRequest. Do not add separate BytePlus and Gemini fixes. Preserve the configured secret reference instead of exposing the resolved host.

Preserve invalid passthrough path errors for secret-backed base URLs.

For a valid base URL, BuildPassthroughURL returns invalid passthrough path %q: must be a rooted path for //x and non-empty paths without a leading /. The wrapper currently replaces this caller-input error with invalid provider base url resolved from <ref>, which misidentifies the cause.

The invalid passthrough url error can also result from malformed caller rawQuery, so do not describe it as exclusively base-derived.

Keep one invalid provider from aborting the full provider load.

GetProvidersConfig loads all providers through TableProvider.AfterFind. An empty base_url reference makes that hook return an error, so one invalid provider can prevent every provider from loading. Preserve the error for per-provider initialization instead of returning it from the collection load.

Dev's new runAnthropicStreamUsageTurn test (core/utils_test.go) builds a
NetworkConfig with a string base_url; it now passes schemas.NewSecretVar.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Signed-off-by: Valentin Yanakiev <valentin.yanakiev@gmail.com>
A connection error quotes the address it dialed: fasthttp's "dial tcp
host:port: connect: connection refused", a DNS error's host, the realtime
pool's "failed to dial upstream websocket wss://...". ErrorField.MarshalJSON
sends that text to the caller, so a base_url resolved from an env./vault.
reference reached anyone with inference access whenever the upstream was
unreachable.

RedactBaseURL is LoggableURL for free text: it replaces every form of the
resolved endpoint (the URL, the URL without its scheme, the host with and
without its port) with the reference, and leaves a literal base_url alone.
It is applied at the shared boundaries:

- core/bifrost.go: once, after retries, on the error the worker delivers,
so every provider's MakeRequestWithContext and DoStreamingRequest failures
are covered, and the post-hooks (logging) see the redacted text. The
carried error still unwraps for errors.Is/As.
- the realtime handler's pool dial error, which goes to the client; and the
live and WS-responses dial errors, which go to the server log.
- BuildPassthroughURLFromSecret now redacts the error instead of replacing
it, so a rejected caller path still reads as one.

Success paths are unchanged: the redaction runs only on an error, and only
when base_url is a reference.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Signed-off-by: Valentin Yanakiev <valentin.yanakiev@gmail.com>
The configstore migration moves a provider's base_url reference onto a
key. NetworkConfig.UnmarshalJSON trims the resolved provider-level value,
but getBaseURL only trimmed trailing slashes from the key URL, so a
variable with surrounding whitespace produced a key that cannot reach the
server. getBaseURL now trims the key URL the same way; storage keeps the
reference.

The SGL test is new in decision_test.go, whose package does not build on
dev at the moment (maximhq#8974's DecisionInputPart literal predates maximhq#9155's
DecisionData); it passes with that line fixed locally.

@akshaydeo thank you for approving this, and for merging dev into it and adding the benchmark yourself. Thanks too for reviewing and merging #7896, #7895 and #6741 last week, including resolving their conflicts and the message_delta perf fix.

The review bots posted findings right after your approval. I addressed them in a96373a and 059ec51:

  • Realtime and connection errors exposed a secret-backed endpoint (greptile, coderabbit). The new RedactBaseURL is the free-text counterpart of LoggableURL: it replaces every form of the resolved URL with its env./vault. reference. It runs once in the core worker after retries, so connection errors from every provider, unary and streaming, reach callers and post-hooks redacted. It also runs at the realtime, live and WS-responses dial sites.
  • Passthrough path errors (coderabbit): BuildPassthroughURLFromSecret now redacts the error instead of replacing it, so a bad caller path still says so.
  • Migrated Ollama/SGL key URLs (greptile): getBaseURL trims whitespace the same way network_config.base_url is trimmed.
  • Not changed: an empty base_url reference still fails the provider load (coderabbit, provider.go:131). That fail-loud behavior has been deliberate since the first commit. Happy to switch to per-provider failure if you'd prefer.

I also merged current dev. It had one new string base_url call site, in core/utils_test.go. Literal base URLs and success paths are unchanged.

The push dismissed your approval. Could you re-approve and merge when you get a chance? BearTS's change request from 09-28 is still recorded as blocking, although the points he raised were addressed by 10-06.

FYI, unrelated to this PR: on current dev, the vllm and sgl test packages don't compile. #8974's DecisionInputPart{Data: []byte{...}} literals predate #9155's DecisionData type.
