Presentation
The data sources are the Travel Time System and the automatic measuring devices (LAM) of the Finnish Transport Agency, road weather stations, road surface pictures.
Travel Time System collects data about vehicles travel times on certain road stretches (links). The data is gathered by camera technology and automatic licence plate recognisation (ALPR) method.
The automatic measuring devices collect data about traffic amounts and speeds by the induction loops embedded in the road surface.
The road weather stations measure information about the ordinary weather conditions (temperature of air and relative moisture, dew point temperature, rain, wind etc) and in addition road weather station measure information about the state of the road surface with the help of special sensors.
The pictures of the weather and traffic cameras gives information about the state of road surface and about traffic situation of the road.
The road traffic centers produces information about incidents, roadworks and frost heaves.
The travel times are collected from 3300 km (devided to more than 300 links) of Finnish main road and congested road stretches around the biggest cities. Also the most important roads leading to Russian border in south-east Finland are covered. See coverage on map.{{ :map.jpg?nolink&200|}}
The amount of the real time automatic measuring devices in Finland is about 250. They are all connected to the service.
On Finland's roads are more than 350 road weather stations which are usually located onthe stams of main roads. In Southern Finland and Southwest Finland and in coastal areas are most stations, because wheather changes are more general. The road weather information are usually updated 3-6 times in an hour, when temperature is near the zero, the information will be updated more often.
In Finland are four road traffic centers, which territories cover the whole country. The road traffic centers produces real-time traffic messages, co-operating with other authorities and combining the information of different data sources. The incident information will be published if the event has a significant effect on the traffic.
