fix(esbuild, bun): keep empty results, filter by id before reading, normalize hooks once - #634
Implements plans/004-esbuild-bun-hot-path.md: six independent problems in the esbuild per-module pipeline, two of which Bun (modelled on it) shares.
esbuild
Empty-string results were discarded.if (code) and result?.contents truthiness treated '' as "no result", so a plugin that stubs a module out or strips a file was a silent no-op on esbuild only. Checks are now != null / !== undefined, matching Bun's explicit hasResult.
Every module was read from disk before the id filter ran.onTransform called getContents() and only then filter(id, code), so transform: { filter: { id: /\.vue$/ } } read every JS file in the graph for nothing. normalizeObjectHook('transform', …) now also returns the id-only predicate (idFilter), and esbuild checks it before reading.
Filters were recompiled per module.normalizeObjectHook (which compiles picomatch matchers) ran inside every onResolve/onLoad/onTransform call. Hoisted to setup, as rollup/bun/webpack/rspack already do.
watchFiles was one build-lifetime array, returned by reference from every hook result, so in context.watch() every module depended on every file any hook had ever added and the array grew forever. Each plugin-context call now has its own list.
Dead source-map branch removed: let map was never assigned before if (map && result.map), so the combineSourcemaps arm was unreachable and hid a result.map === 'string' typo. The load map is already inlined into the code it returns.
Bun
Setup crashed when a plugin set transformInclude without transform: the filter admitted it, then normalizeObjectHook('transform', undefined) dereferenced .handler. Fails on main with Cannot destructure property 'handler'.
Bun.file(id).text() ran before any transform filter was consulted. The applicable hooks are now decided by transformInclude + idFilter first; the file is read only if one of them wants it, and transformInclude is still evaluated exactly once per module (the id-consistency suite counts calls).
Tests
New: esbuild transform → '' removes the original code; load → '' for a virtual id builds; no fs.promises.readFile of fixture files when the id filter rejects; watch files are per hook call; createPluginContext tracks its own files; Bun transformInclude-only plugin sets up without throwing. Four of the esbuild tests and the Bun test fail on main.
Adjusted: the two browser:false stub tests now use a filter that matches the extension-less stub path — with id filtering, the old /\.[cm]?js$/ filter means the stub is never read, so the ENOENT/caching behaviour they exist to test wasn't being exercised anymore.
pnpm test → 216 passed; bun -b vitest → all green except esbuild/utils.test.ts > composes C:\project\entry #100%.js…, which also fails on main under Bun 1.3.14 here (Bun fileURLToPath difference, unrelated).
Created with the help of an agent.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Build integrations now preserve intentionally empty results from plugins.
Transform filters are applied more consistently, and files are read only when a matching transform is available.
Watch files added by one plugin context no longer appear in other plugin contexts.
The Bun and esbuild adapters now filter transform candidates before reading source. The esbuild adapter retains empty-string hook results, uses transform-result source maps directly, and tracks watch files separately for each plugin context.
Transform hook normalization exposes an ID-only filter. Bun and esbuild apply ID filtering before source reads. Tests cover a Bun plugin without a transform handler, rejected transform filters, and updated stub filters.
esbuild hook results and callback setup src/esbuild/index.ts, test/unit-tests/esbuild/fixtures/empty-result/*, test/unit-tests/esbuild/index.test.ts, plans/README.md
The adapter normalizes hooks before callback registration and treats empty-string load and transform results as present. Transform results use their own source map. Tests cover empty results; Plan 004 is marked DONE.
unjs/unplugin#611: Changes the same esbuild getContents() path for empty-string file contents and browser-false stubs.
unjs/unplugin#628: Adds Plan 004 and its execution-order entry, which this PR marks DONE.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 0dfad
In esbuild watch mode, files a load hook registers with addWatchFile are lost when a transform later replaces that module's result, so edits to them no longer trigger rebuilds. Merge the watch-file lists when the result is replaced before merging. The buildEnd change is minor.

Explanation
The title names the esbuild and Bun fixes and lists three behaviors: keeping empty results, filtering by ID before reading, and normalizing hooks once. The changeset does all three: empty-string contents are kept in esbuild, the transform ID filter runs before the file is read in both adapters, and hooks are normalized outside their callbacks. The title does not mention the Bun setup fix for transformInclude without a transform hook, or the per-context watchFiles change. Those are secondary, so the title is still a fair summary of the main change.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 9 functions across 10 files. Preserve load-hook watch files when a transform returns code.
If load calls addWatchFile('config.json') and transform returns code, result = _result replaces the load result's watchFiles with the transform context's separate list. Esbuild then cannot watch config.json, so edits to it do not trigger a rebuild. This also applies to the newly accepted empty-string transform result. Merge the watch-file lists when replacing result, and test the load-plus-transform case. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Retain the build-wide list for getWatchFiles().
If a plugin calls this.getWatchFiles() in buildEnd, this method now returns [] even after its module hooks called addWatchFile(). The esbuild adapter calls buildEnd with this build context. Keep a separate build-wide list for that query without passing the list as every module’s watchFiles result. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
