Aligned Translations, Treebanking Part II

May 18, 2016: 17h00-18h15 CEST

Anise D'Orange Ferreira (UNESP Araraquara)

Summary

The common session will focus on sharing three tasks. First, since we have had recent improvements in the tagger for our Greek-Portuguese dictionary, we will discuss the adequacy of the selection of TEI-XML tags for our dictionary structure and invite feedback.

Then, we propose discussing alignment and treebanking progress, along with questions and challenges we have had in our classes concerning Greek texts and the use of the Perseids tools, Alpheios and Arethusa.

The target corpus for this session will be the alignment Greek-Portuguese and English -Portuguese of Paul’s 1st Epistle 13; two of Aesop’s fables (Chambry 59 and 107). As to treebanking, the corpus will be a few selected verses from Euripides’ Heracles.

Session Plan

  • Introduction: why we engaged in those tasks

  • Dictionary selection of TEI-XML tags: the dictionary structure and the tagger

  • Decisions about alignment conventions for Portuguese translations

  • Difficulties found in treebanking annotations
