Activities

Activities are a centre piece in measuring the workload of a colleague.

Custom Activities

Custom Activities are those that are added directly to a colleagues workload. Or they might be an activity that is created and not initially allocated - simply indicating that this activity needs to be done by someone and that allocation is necessary.

Creating an Activity

Activities can be created directly in the Admin Interface.

You will need to give your Activity a Name, and also either Hours, or a Percentage of a colleagues workload. You will also need to choose a Semester or several that the activity occupies. Semesters will usually be 1, 2 or 3, but formally it is a comma separated combination of those. In other words "1" represents semester 1, while "1,2,3" represents an activity spread across the whole year.

You need to specify the Type of the Activity from types previously configured, and the Work Package it belongs to.

You can optionally indicate that the Activity belongs to a Module, but read on for automatic Module Activities. Finally you need to assign this Activity to a Staff Member.

Granularity

It is a major question of your model as to how granular your activities should be, ranging from one Activity showing all research activity for the whole year, down to individual PhD supervision. It is up to you.

Automatic Module Activities

Assigning staff to Module workloads will automatically create workload implications against them, so may avoid the need for custom activities in many cases.

Advanced Activity Creation

WAM contains functionality to bulk create Activities. Currently this can be done by Projects (for instance a Research Grant) or Generators (which can create the same custom activity for a whole group of Staff, if you wish).
