The OpenAPI MCP server spec size limit was hard-coded at 5 MiB, which rejects real-world specs. Bifrost's own OpenAPI document is about 5.06 MiB and was refused with a 413. This PR raises the built-in default to 32 MiB and adds client_config.mcp_openapi_max_spec_mb, so operators can raise or lower the limit. The limit is editable in the UI and read on every spec load, so a change applies to the next preview, create, update or connect without a restart.
Changes
New setting mcp_openapi_max_spec_mb
Unit is MiB. 0 or unset means the default of 32, and the maximum is 256.
It is stored in config_client through a new migration, add_client_config_mcp_openapi_max_spec_mb_column. The column defaults to 0, so existing rows need no backfill and a rolled-back binary ignores it.
It is hashed only when set, so config hashes written before this field existed do not change.
It is exposed in the config API, config.schema.json, the OpenAPI schema docs and the deployment guide docs.
openapimcp package
MaxSpecBytes goes from 5 MiB to 32 MiB.
New LoadBytesLimit, LoadFileLimit, LoadURLLimit and ResolveSpecLimit take an explicit limit. The old functions delegate with 0.
Factory gains WithMaxSpecBytes(func() int). It is read on every connect, so a changed setting applies to the next one.
ErrSpecTooLarge now reports the limit that was actually exceeded. errors. Is still matches regardless of the limit.
The duplicate post-read size checks in file and URL loading are folded into LoadBytesLimit.
HTTP handlers
Preview, create, update and the relays spec fetch all use the configured limit via Config.MCPOpenAPIMaxSpecBytes(), which reads under the config lock. config.json spec-file loading uses it too.
PUT /api/config copies the field only when it is sent, so a partial save keeps the stored value. An explicit 0 resets it.
Values below 0 or above 256 are rejected with a 400.
A JSON null is also rejected with a 400. It would otherwise decode as 0 and silently reset the limit.
UI
A new "Max OpenAPI Spec Size (MiB)" input under Settings > MCP Gateway validates whole numbers from 0 to 256.
The OpenAPI upload tab uses the configured limit for its pre-upload check and its hint text. Users who cannot read the config get the 32 MiB default.
The upload size is now memoized instead of re-encoding the text on every render.
CI
raw.githubusercontent.com:443 is added to the egress allowlist in the release-pipeline and core-test workflows. A new e2e case fetches Bifrost's own spec from a pinned release tag.

Manual checks:
Preview an OpenAPI spec larger than 5 MiB and smaller than 32 MiB, either pasted or via spec_url. It should now return 200 and list the tools.
In Settings > MCP Gateway, set "Max OpenAPI Spec Size (MiB)" to 1 and save. Previewing or creating a larger spec should return 413 with exceeds 1048576 bytes. Setting it back to 0 restores the 32 MiB default.
PUT /api/config with "mcp_openapi_max_spec_mb": null, -1 or 257 should return 400. Omitting the field should keep the stored value.
New config: client.mcp_openapi_max_spec_mb in config.json (integer, default 0, which means 32, maximum 256). It is also editable in the UI and via PUT /api/config.

Security considerations
Parsing holds several times the spec's size in memory, so the setting is capped at 256 MiB. The UI, the API and the config schema all enforce the cap.
Raising the default to 32 MiB increases the worst-case memory used per spec parse.
File and URL reads stay bounded by io.LimitReader at the configured limit plus one byte, so a special file or a growing response cannot exhaust memory.
The e2e test and the CI allowlist change add outbound access to raw.githubusercontent.com in the two workflows only.

Set the maximum OpenAPI specification size in Settings > MCP Gateway or config.json, from 0 to 256 MiB. A value of 0 uses the 32 MiB default.
OpenAPI uploads, previews, and client connections honor the configured limit and report an error when a specification is too large.
Documentation
Updated the documented default from 5 MiB to 32 MiB and added details about configuring the limit.
The OpenAPI MCP specification size limit is configurable from 0 to 256 MiB, with 0 selecting the 32 MiB default. The limit is stored in client configuration and applied to OpenAPI loading, parsing, previews, and uploads.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 5a669
Raising the OpenAPI spec limit above about 100 MiB does not work for uploads unless the request-body limit is also raised. Out-of-range values in config.json are not rejected, and CI Workflow Lint currently fails on the proxy egress allowlist. Resolve these before merging.

File settings bypass size ceiling
config.json can set mcp_openapi_max_spec_mb above the documented 256 MiB maximum. Startup calls validateClientConfig, but it never checks this field. This helper then applies any positive value directly: 1024 allows a 1 GiB document, whose parsing can use several times that much memory.
The repository requires new config fields to stay aligned across the schema and handlers. Check the same 0–256 range in validateClientConfig and add startup tests for invalid values.
Rule Used: transports/config.schema.json is the source of truth for config fields. New config fields must stay aligned with handlers, docs, and UI behavior. (source)

Account for the HTTP body limit in OpenAPI uploads.
When mcp_openapi_max_spec_mb is set above 100 MiB, the UI can accept a spec that the default max_request_body_size_mb rejects. Uploads are sent as JSON, so a 110 MiB spec produces a request larger than 100 MiB and can be rejected before previewOpenAPISpec runs. The route has no separate body-size override.
Make the effective upload limit consistent. Either raise max_request_body_size_mb to cover the configured spec limit and JSON overhead, or add a separately bounded OpenAPI request path. Documenting max_request_body_size_mb in docs/openapi/schemas/management/config.yaml is a separate documentation edit and does not fix the UI or runtime behavior.

Document the request-body limit for uploads.

Rename the model-free management cases so PROVIDER=openai skips them.
Both new names contain openai. The harness matches a case to a provider by checking whether its serialized name, request, description, or folder names contain one of that provider's keywords. The openai keyword therefore selects both cases for every OpenAI sweep. The preview case then fetches a 5 MiB spec_url in each of those runs. The runner states that mcp rows are management rows with no model, and that only PROVIDER=mcp should run them. Remove the provider keyword from the names. The folder name already contains mcp, so PROVIDER=mcp still selects them.

Apply the same change to the PUT /api/config case. Keep its [EXPECT-400] tag. The earlier cases in folder 229 use the same openai prefix. Rename them in the same change if they should also leave the OpenAI partition.

Validate the limit during configuration loading.
validateClientConfig does not enforce the documented 0–256 MiB range. A config.json value such as 1024 can be reconciled and persisted, then MCPOpenAPIMaxSpecBytes converts it to a 1 GiB limit. A negative value returns 0 and selects the built-in default. Move the range check into validateClientConfig so configuration loading and the handler use the same invariant.

Overview
The OpenAPI MCP server spec size limit was hard-coded at 5 MiB, which rejects real-world specs. Bifrost's own OpenAPI document is about 5.06 MiB and was refused with a 413. This PR raises the built-in default to 32 MiB and adds
client_config.mcp_openapi_max_spec_mb, so operators can raise or lower the limit. The limit is editable in the UI and read on every spec load, so a change applies to the next preview, create, update or connect without a restart.Changes
