feat(logs): GET /api/logs/{id}/trace, shared with Warp's get_request_trace - #8925
Adds GET /api/logs/{id}/trace, which returns the causal chain behind a single request. The chain covers its retry attempts, every provider and model tried in the fallback chain (in order, with success or failure and why), and each hop's guardrail decisions, cache decisions and latency breakdown. Until now this was only available to Warp's get_request_trace tool. API clients and the management MCP had no way to explain why one request failed or behaved unexpectedly.
Changes
New endpoint GET /api/logs/{id}/trace, registered behind the same hidden-request-type wrapper and Logs:View permission as GET /api/logs/{id}.
The id can be the root request or any fallback hop; the full chain is returned either way.
An unknown id, or a chain root the caller can't see, returns 404. Other failures return 500.
The trace-building logic moved from framework/warp into framework/logstore as BuildRequestTrace, so the HTTP endpoint and Warp's get_request_trace tool produce the same chain.
Types are now exported: RequestTrace, TraceNode, TraceAttempt, TraceError, TraceCache, TraceGuardrailDecision, TracePluginLogLine and TraceOverhead.
Missing rows surface as TraceNotFoundError, which matches ErrNotFound. It names the row that could not be loaded, which may be the chain root rather than the requested id.
Reads go through a small TraceReader interface (GetLog and Search), so the caller's access scope applies to every row.
The Warp tool is now a thin wrapper that fills in dashboard link values and keeps its own not-found wording. The API leaves link empty.
Bounds are unchanged and now documented on the endpoint:
at most 10 fallback hops;
at most 20 attempts, guardrail calls and log lines per hop;
error and guardrail reason text truncated to 300 characters;
plugin and routing-engine text parsed only up to 64 KiB.
When the chain is longer than the cap, truncated_chain is true and final_status is omitted, since the last returned node may not be the terminal hop.
Plugin logs are flattened across plugins and sorted by timestamp before the node-wide cap is applied, preserving cross-plugin ordering.
Self-referencing parent_request_id rows are not followed as their own root.
OpenAPI: added the /api/logs/{id}/trace path (getLogTrace) and the RequestTrace and RequestTraceNode schemas. The description states that the endpoint explains one request and cannot explain aggregate changes such as error spikes or latency shifts.
Tests:
Unit tests in logstore cover resolving the chain from any hop, not-found handling for a missing row or missing root, truncation, and cross-plugin log ordering with a node-wide cap.
A handler test covers the 200 and 404 cases and checks that /api/logs/{id} still returns the plain log.
A new e2e collection case (265) seeds a request, waits for its log row, checks the trace, checks that an unknown id returns 404, and cleans up.
The plugin-log ordering test moved with the code from warp to logstore.

Expected:
root_id equals the request id, nodes[0].provider is openai, truncated_chain is false, and final_status is success.
Requesting the trace by a fallback hop's id returns the same chain.
An unknown id returns 404.
GET /api/logs/<request-id> is unchanged and does not contain chain_length.
No new configs or environment variables.

Security considerations
The endpoint requires the Logs:View permission and uses the log manager for every read, so RBAC and access scope apply to the requested row, the chain root and the fallback hops.
A row outside the caller's scope returns 404, not 403.
The response contains only projected diagnostic fields, not raw request or response bodies.
Plugin and routing-engine log text is size-bounded before parsing, and error and guardrail reason text is truncated.

Summary
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added GET /api/logs/{id}/trace to view a request trace using either the root request ID or a fallback-hop ID. Access requires Logs:View.
Traces include the request chain, retries, hop statuses, and available diagnostic details such as cache and guardrail decisions, logs, and latency breakdowns.
Trace results are bounded. Responses indicate when a chain is truncated, and include a final status only for complete chains. Unknown or inaccessible requests return 404.
The change adds bounded request-trace construction to logstore, exposes traces through GET /api/logs/{id}/trace, and updates the Warp trace tool to use the shared implementation. It also adds API documentation and tests for chain resolution, truncation, and endpoint responses.
Changes: Request Trace
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Trace model and construction framework/logstore/trace.go, framework/logstore/tables.go, framework/logstore/rdb.go, framework/logstore/trace_test.go
Adds trace data structures and bounded log projection. BuildRequestTrace resolves a request from its ID or a fallback-hop ID, orders nodes by fallback index, and marks truncated chains. Parent-scoped searches can filter to fallback hops. Tests cover chain resolution, missing rows, truncation, and plugin-log ordering.
Adds the documented trace route and HTTP handler. The handler returns 400 for an empty ID, 404 for missing records, and 500 for other trace errors. Tests cover route responses and an end-to-end trace request.

Possibly related issues
maximhq/bifrost#9251: The issue concerns the /api/logs* contract when the logging plugin is unavailable. This change adds another endpoint in that API surface, but does not address plugin-loading failure.
maximhq/bifrost#9316: The issue concerns log lookup and child-log scan performance. The trace builder performs an ID lookup and searches fallback children.
Possibly related PRs
maximhq/bifrost#8889: Builds management MCP tools from the OpenAPI document, which this change updates with the trace operation.
maximhq/bifrost#8941: Adds fallback-chain presentation in the log detail UI, which uses the same request and fallback-chain concepts.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b554e
Fallback traces can omit important diagnostic details, and filtered test runs can skip trace checks and cleanup. Address these before merging.

Add the model name to the four follow-up log-trace case names.
The case-name rule requires the provider keyword and the model in each name. The seed case already includes gpt-4o-mini. The four follow-up cases do not. Add the model to each name. The [EXPECT-404] tag on the unknown-ID case is already present and should stay.

Fallback details disappear
The new trace endpoint builds fallback nodes directly from Search results. Those rows omit retry attempts, plugin logs, routing logs, overhead spans, stop reasons, and normal provider errors. A failed fallback therefore appears without its stored failure reason, preventing callers from explaining what happened.
Load each returned hop through the scoped GetLog reader before calling TraceFromLog, or add a trace-specific read. Add a real-store test with diagnostics on a fallback hop; the current tests only check its ID and status.

Load fallback hops with GetLog before TraceFromLog.
SearchLogs selects a projection that omits attempt_trail, ordinary error_details, plugin_logs, routing_engine_logs, and overhead_breakdown. TraceFromLog reads these fields, so fallback nodes can lose their retry, error, diagnostic, and overhead details. The projection does include cache_debug and guardrail_debug; those fields are not part of this omission.

Paginate fallback hops by fallback_index.
BuildRequestTrace limits the search to 10 rows before sorting the page by FallbackIndex. ClickHouse stores timestamps with millisecond precision, and Search breaks timestamp ties by id. More than 10 rapid fallback attempts can therefore cause the cap to exclude a lower-index hop.

<excerpt>citeturn0search3 [wordlim: 200] Published: 3 months ago; Crawled: 4 weeks ago; GoStd127 | `encoding/json` on Go 1.27 | v1 API backed by jsonv2 by default ... `UTF8-ENC` | Go string contains invalid UTF-8 | Escaped `\ufffd` | Literal U+FFFD in output | Matches SonicStd | Byte-level output ... Go 1.18 through Go 1.26 and Sonic releases from v1.0.0 through v1.15.2 instead returned a finite value near `5.33e-114` without an error. ... 3. keep the stricter behavior in the direct v2 API and expose an option for callers that need v1 behavior. ... * `ValidateString` provides stricter string validation, although it is not a complete JSONV2 compatibility switch.
This is consistent with the release-note warning that exact error presentation may change, while machine-consumed position data still needs compatibility.
### Official Mapping for Direct JSONV2 Defaults
These six cases are not facade regressions. They are documented v2 defaults with explicit migration controls in the accepted proposal and `v2_options.go`:
Direct JSONV2 default | v1 behavior restored by
--- | ---
Reject duplicate object names | `jsontext.AllowDuplicateNames(true)`
Match struct fields case-sensitively | `jsonv2.MatchCaseInsensitiveNames(true)` plus the v1 delimiter rule
Encode nil slices/maps as `[]`/`{}` | `jsonv2.FormatNilSliceAsNull(true)` and `FormatNilMapAsNull(true)`
Require an exact array length | `jsonv1.UnmarshalArrayFromAnyLength(true)`
Encode `[N]byte` as Base64 | `jsonv1.FormatByteArrayAsArray(true)`
Reject invalid UTF-8 | `jsontext.AllowInvalidUTF8(true)`
Historical issues such as #14750 for case-insensitive field matching and #37711 / #27589 for nil collection output explain why configuration was requested. The final accepted resolution is #71497: strict v2 defaults, a complete v1 preset, and composable options for hybrid migration.
## Alignment Sentinels
The catalog also keeps cases that currently agree with the active v1 facade. They catch accidental Sonic drift:
* Invalid UTF-8 decoding replaces invalid bytes with U+FFFD.
* Plain `TextMarshaler` map keys remain aligned.
* Duplicate object names are accepted and the last value wins.
* Oversized arrays are truncated when decoding into a fixed-size Go array.
* A `[3]byte` value encodes as `[1,2,3]`.
* A non-nil `*bool(false)` is not omitted by `omitempty`.
* Trailing non-whitespace input returns an error.
Separate preset cases document intentional Sonic configuration differences:
* `ConfigDefault` does not HTML-escape; `ConfigStd` does.
* A nil slice encodes as `null` by default.
* Field-name matching is case-insensitive unless `CaseSensitive` is enabled.
## Direct JSONV2 Defaults
`TestJSONV2Semantics` records intentional differences between the v1 facade and direct `encoding/json/v2` use:
Case and test | SonicStd / GoStd127 | JSONV2
--- | --- | ---
Duplicate names | Accepted; last value wins | Error

Trim the partial UTF-8 rune after the byte cut.
TraceFromLog can return a routing-log string that starts with continuation bytes when the cut splits a multibyte rune. SendJSON uses Sonic ConfigStd, which replaces those invalid bytes with U+FFFD; invalid UTF-8 does not reach the HTTP response. The response instead contains visible replacement characters.

Review comment at @framework/logstore/trace.go around lines 334 - 337:
Update TraceFromLog’s byte-trimming logic to skip any leading UTF-8 continuation
bytes immediately after the byte cut, before removing the partial line, so the
returned routing-log string starts at a valid rune boundary.

Keep the log-trace requests together in filtered runs.
Filtered runs select each request on its own. --class chat puts the seed request (openai log-trace seed) in the chat class because its URL contains /v1/chat/completions. The wait, trace, 404, and cleanup requests do not contain chat-class keywords, so they fall into other. A --class chat run therefore sends the seed without its wait, trace assertions, or cleanup. Shard slicing can split the requests the same way. Dependency expansion does not close this gap. It adds upstream producers to a selected consumer, not downstream consumers to a selected producer.
Only a folder whose name contains [serial] is kept whole. Adding the tag keeps all five requests in one serial pass:
This folder does not change gateway-wide state, so the serial pass costs time without a state-isolation need. Folder 286 already uses [SERIAL] for a similar per-request reason, so this matches existing practice.

Update the folder name for “265. Request trace endpoint (log-trace)” to include
the recognized serial tag so its seed, wait, trace, error-check, and cleanup
requests stay together in filtered and sharded runs.

Overview
Adds
GET /api/logs/{id}/trace, which returns the causal chain behind a single request. The chain covers its retry attempts, every provider and model tried in the fallback chain (in order, with success or failure and why), and each hop's guardrail decisions, cache decisions and latency breakdown. Until now this was only available to Warp'sget_request_tracetool. API clients and the management MCP had no way to explain why one request failed or behaved unexpectedly.Changes
GET /api/logs/{id}/trace, registered behind the same hidden-request-type wrapper andLogs:Viewpermission asGET /api/logs/{id}.framework/warpintoframework/logstoreasBuildRequestTrace, so the HTTP endpoint and Warp'sget_request_tracetool produce the same chain.RequestTrace,TraceNode,TraceAttempt,TraceError,TraceCache,TraceGuardrailDecision,TracePluginLogLineandTraceOverhead.TraceNotFoundError, which matchesErrNotFound. It names the row that could not be loaded, which may be the chain root rather than the requested id.TraceReaderinterface (GetLogandSearch), so the caller's access scope applies to every row.linkvalues and keeps its own not-found wording. The API leaveslinkempty.truncated_chainistrueandfinal_statusis omitted, since the last returned node may not be the terminal hop.parent_request_idrows are not followed as their own root./api/logs/{id}/tracepath (getLogTrace) and theRequestTraceandRequestTraceNodeschemas. The description states that the endpoint explains one request and cannot explain aggregate changes such as error spikes or latency shifts.logstorecover resolving the chain from any hop, not-found handling for a missing row or missing root, truncation, and cross-plugin log ordering with a node-wide cap./api/logs/{id}still returns the plain log.warptologstore.Type of change
