The core ontology is the stable part of our ontology that is designed to see few updates and that provides compatibility of data gathered through research protocol extensions (cf. General ontology structure).

Internally, the core ontology comprises a number of modules, serving the following purposes:

  • Research data model
Addresses collections, collection objects, other materials, institutions, persons, documents and informational resources involved in research. Also provides a basis for methods and research designs exemplified by research protocol extensions.
  • Anatomical model
    Addresses human anatomy.
  • Geographical model
Addresses geographical locations of sites and institutions.
  • Chronological model
    Addresses dating of collection material.

Wherever possible, established ontologies (like GeoNames for geographical entities and FMA / OpenGalen for human anatomy) are used to provide the functionalities of these modules. These are tried and tested during long periods of use.
