Relating documents to other entities

Information on skeletal remains can be drawn from published references, web resources or analytic reports. Personal communication, log books and excavation reports are potential resources for learning about the formation of skeletal collections. The modelling of information on these types of documents is based on the way they are addressed in VIVO (cf. Documents in VIVO).

Direct relations between documents and other entities

Document meta data contain a number of relations with other entities, like authors, editors or publishers. Confer to Documents in VIVO to get an overview of these direct connections. Here, some contexts are discussed where documents contain certain kinds of information on things that are not immediately connected to the documents themselves.

Textual documents about things

If an entity is dealt with in a textual document, this fact is expressed with obo:mentions and its inverse property :isMentioned, respectively.

Images showing things

The representation of entities in visual media is expressed with :depicts and its inverse property :isDepicted, respectively. The property can also be used for audiovisual media (audio and film/video), although such documents are not expected to frequently document skeletal collections and research.

Special case: People and Organisations

For instances of the class foaf:Agent or its subclasses, there is a special pair of properties to link them with instances of the class obo:IAO_0000030 ('Information Content Entity') or its subclasses (including bibo:Document): vivo:features and vivo:featuredIn. These can be used to link persons, groups and organisations to documents where these entities appear.

vivo:[featuredIn and its inverse property should be used to extend information about the instance; e.g. by information that is stored in some work of reference or on a dedicated web portal. For other relations, or if in doubt, :isMentioned and :isDepicted or their inverse properties should be used.

Citation

An informal way of linking documents to other entities is provided by research references (:ResearchReference). This is explained in the section on research notes.
